Hi Ms Heather I’m so darn happy for ya!! I sure remember my first chickens. I still love them all very much. I’m called “the crazy chicken lady” or my husband says I’m a chicken hoarder because I can’t just buy two or three when I get new chicks lol (it’s called chicken math) I wanted to let you know since you’re still working on the coop that one of the best things we did to our coop was to put linoleum on the floor. It makes clean up so darn easy. I bought a scrap piece at Lowe’s. It was very much inexpensive. Hope all goes well😊 I wish you were my neighbor!

This was so much fun to watch. I just got my first batch of chicks this year, over the course of two weeks, so I have some different ages, too. Looks like just a bit older than yours. I haven’t come up with names yet, I need 14! Except one, she’s my Lil’ Nugget because she was a bit small and needed a little help the first two days. They are all doing great so far and except for my fiber room smelling a little, I love them.

@rootsrocksfeathers19754 жыл бұрын
I went back to see your list and you said a Buff Brahma male, but the light one looks more like a Lt Brahma to me. Been a few years since I had a Lt Brahma male here (I got a sexing mistake about 13 years ago and he was so sweet!), but that's what it looks like. The thing is that Brahmas change so darn much in coloring as they grow. Could be a Lt Brahma girl. My Brahma pullets tend to start out larger than the males. You'll know in a week or so, I bet. You know, just the way I do things is that I never mix anything in with my chick starter to keep from lowering the protein level, and after the first few days, they get only plain water unless someone has pasty butt. If they're getting good quality feed formulated for their age and clean water, that's what's important, though, as I always say! Your brooder is impeccable! I always say I spend more time on cleaning the chickens' house than my own, LOL. Your little feathered piglets look to be doing well and I know you're loving being a chick-mom. It's harder to see who is who with Easter Eggers. Ameraucanas come in only 8-9 accepted colors, per the standard, so are generally solid colors like blue, black, white, etc, not patterned like that, so they're easier to figure out earlier. The wild patterns of EEs are trickier until they are older and get their more mature feathers. I wish I had done videos way back when I was sexing Ameraucanas, but any pea-combed breed, including Brahmas, is similar with males having wide comb backs and the three rows of "peas" visible earlier while females have the center ridge prominent for a good while. As for EE coloring, for example, my 12 yr old EE hen had a black beard as a chick and it had zero black in it when she matured. She's quite a gal, my June. Have fun! ~Cyn
@rootsrocksfeathers19754 жыл бұрын
Heather, wanted to add that those mealworms really pack a protein punch, but you know, I have hens who wouldn't even eat them, can you imagine?? They say chickens go nuts over mealworms, but mine must have read the wrong manual, LOL! I was scolding them, saying, "You are supposed to love these!" I can't wait to see how all the sexes and colors shake out in your brooder! Those were the days, sigh. I want so much to hatch some baby Brahmas again, but I'm sure that either Brandy or Bonnie, my perpetual broodies, will come through for me soon... if the weather ever actually feels like spring! Take care, my friend.

The Kneady Homesteader I really want to go to the book store so I can pick up some canning books. I’ve bought a few that you and Linda use (Amish Cook Book & A few others.) I like watching your videos, it’s EASY to hear you, you explain everything as much as possible, you’re patient and don’t talk extremely fast. To someone who is a NEW canner, it’s a relief. You seem so nice and that makes it easy for us who have questions to ask. Thank you! When I start learning more and getting in the swing of things I’ll be teaching my wife and my son how to can (so I don’t have to be the ONLY one doing it LOL)

Hey Heather, me again. Can you can ground beef with veggies safely? I'm thinking okra & tomatoes for okra gumbo.
@TheKneadyHomesteader4 жыл бұрын
My personal view is that ingredients should be canned separately for versatility. So ground beef in it's own jar, tomatoes in their own jar, etc.
