About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

Tina Turner behaves like a rooster and the Cochins are kinda bullies to the chicks so I would keep my eyes on those for future reference because its not good to keep Nasty chickens in your coop to stress your other birds out...........I used to keep chickens and I'm just extremely intuitive when it comes to animal behaviors. Also..this has worked without fail for me so far. An old Mexican farmer taught me this . When the chicks are about a week old and they are getting a few wing feathers. If you look closely, they will start to get a few tiny tail feather sticking up out of the fuzz. Pullets will have tail feathers at this point. Rooster will NOT have any, but just a round fuzzy butt. Up until about two weeks or two and a half weeks old,( at which time the roosters start growing tail feathers also) you can tell with a great degree of accuracy with this method.

We had a momma duck take care of her ducklings and another hens chicks. I'm not sure if the chicks thought they were ducks or the ducks thought they were chicks. They would make a line and walk up to the neighbor's place to eat the apples that had fallen off the tree. Then she would bring them all back. The neighbors loved watching them. She always had them back before dark. It was interesting to watch them they were not in a single file line but fanned out, side by side. There was nothing wrong with the hen, but I think she was just lazy...lol

I lost the beginning of this year, 2022, my old man Rooster named Josef. He had so many brilliant colours. Believe it or not he was 17 years old. He was 7 when a friend gave him to me and I had him 10 more years. I miss him. Many of my hens are older than 8 & 9+ years. None younger than 5+ years. They are free range with protection limits. I have 3, one year old beautiful big geese to guard them. They are fed organic and all the offal slop. I have a no kill policy. Mine are layers. They are each a pet...about 28 currently. My geese like to snuggle and give hugs 😂. I have 8 guineas ordered due to arrive in May😁. Brook🧑‍🌾🍏🍎

Mine are also layers. I have 15 hens and 21 pullet that will join the flock soon. We I have 9 Guineas and have been successful in getting them to sleep in the coop. It’s not hard to do but you have to be patient. Every time I fed them I talked to them. 8 weeks inside the coop and 2 weeks with an enclosed outside run, chicken wire all around. To get them back inside the coop from that enclosure I talked to them saying “inside Guinea Guinea” Then when I finally let them free roam I made sure to get them off the trees if they went up by treating them with flock party worms, still saying “inside Guinea Guinea” The Guineas also run to me when I go outside to check on the chickens and willingly go into the coop every night.

See that makes sense to me, seeing as roosters grow those fighting claws when they're old enough. I've had some nasty scratches from those when I postpone butchering too long. Still, seems a little strange to me hanging a chick by the head to figure out its sex.

I'm uncomfortable with the neck stress, I've heard you can hold them on their backs and tell by whether they struggle or not. I look at leg thickness, especially when they are older, if they are all similar in breed stature. I've also heard that on the 4th day from hatch, pullets will have longer wing feathers than roos. Sometimes once they feather, shoulder patches indicate roos. If they are all the same breed, you can tell by brighter comb coloration which are roos at around 3-4 weeks old.

First 3 to 5 days or so you can sex by the feathers. You tube has the info. On doing it several ways. There's info on doing it after they are older. Some breeds the combs and wattles and growth size works, I use several methods, by week 8,I am 90 percent sure. You always get one or two. Roos that will fool you. I have hens that won't lay and won't let the rooster mount. But, they will set on any eggs, and mKe great moms? Old folks call them crowing hens. They growl a lot and are big bullies. what I've noticed when chicks are young the tails don't grow out fast on the roosters

That only works when they r farm raised. From the farm store, they mix them together and the days apart throws that method off, because two days can make a difference in slower development. Not much, but it throws off the sexing of chicks sometimes by 100%.

That only works if the birds in your group have the fast feathering gene. Most birds cannot be sexed that way.

Yes it would depend on the type, the ones I have @ the moment their tail feathers grow that way so it wouldn't be reliable.

Thank you for the tip. I used to watch an old German lady hold a threaded needle over the chick's head at a local farmers market, and depending on if the needle swung back and forth or in a circle she could tell the sex. round and round a hen or back and forth a rooster.

I was just at tractor supply, be careful buying from them. Ours happened to have the bag of feed in their pen area and my local store is using medicated feed. If your okay with that great, but if your not keep your eyes open when picking up any poultry /water fowl chicks from tractor supply😉

That was my thought too..a baby is a baby..no matter what kind of animal.. protecting & separation is common sense..even it's introducing...what a stressful situation for all.. disturbing video..then hanging them by their little delicate neck. Surely there's a better way to figure their sex..

I have to agree with you Mary I've read that when you do this method it cuts off the chickens oxygen because their organs are in different positions then ours are (I get wanting to know the sex but find a safer way for the bird is all I'm saying)
