Do they all live in the coop with all the other hens? What temperature is safe to let them outside?

Both good questions. First, we built a separate smaller coop for when a hen goes broody. Not only does the broody coop provide privacy for mama with her eggs until the chicks hatch, but it also eliminates the many problems associated with other chickens laying eggs in her nesting box. Second, barring extreme blizzards, we don’t worry too much about weather. I think it’s important to get mom & chicks out on natural forage as soon as possible. If it’s cold and wet, mother will warm the chicks frequently throughout the day. Mother hen is the ultimate natural brooder! =)
