Bev Brown devotes her time to helping fruit bat orphans in Melbourne, Australia, to survive the crucial first four months until they are weaned and able to be released. As surrogate mother, Brown tucks her bats in specially designed blankets to simulate how they would be wrapped up in their mother’s wings, bottle-feeds them milk and grooms them daily.

Well that reputation isn't entirely misplaced. Well it is, the bats are just being bats. But they do carry rabies. Each year vampire bats kill livestock in the thousands. You can see why a poor South American farmer might not be too thrilled with bats.

Kristian Brandt That isn’t true. Less than 1% of bats carry rabies. Not all bats. Vampire bats do not kill other animals. They only take a little bit of blood. They lick the blood, they don’t suck it all out

These little baby bats are sooo CUTE!☺️ I know bats can carry rabies but it’s not their fault. They don’t choose to get that horrible disease and people always tell horrible stories about bats to scare us but really these bats are sweet and cute. I love when they are sucking the bottle you can hear little sucking noises. It is just darling and this wonderful woman is an angel for helping them. I wish there were more people like that.

Actually fruitbats have excelent vision, much better than humans. But even for them some buildings and walls are very difficult to see at night.

jaroncreed Bats are not blind. Especially flying foxes. Their vision is even better than human vision. Microbats can see, they just don’t see that good.

Daniel Damak No, you don’t. Bats as pets is very cruel. They’re wild animals, and they need to be in their colonies. Keeping one as a pet is the worst thing you could ever do to torture and traumatize a bat
