It's so hard to imagine that in a year they will become completely independent. They will forget all about how nice some humans can be. I suppose being scared of people is self-preservation but Guinness is such a love that I wish he could somehow find you to show you how well he grew up .

In 3 months they will be completely independent. When they are in the release aviary they will become batties again and they will actively try to get away from the humans when they are being caught for health checks and test flights and weigh and measure.

It's sad to see them go to minicreche, but at the same time, it's happy and satisfying knowing how well you raised them so they can go off to the wild. Guinness will meet new friends and a girlfriend, but really wonder if they do ever fully forget about their human mums.

I was reading about the hairs on bat's wings. They serve as airflow sensors and the bat's brain uses them to configure the optimum wing shape to compensate for wind gusts.

We like doing this and look forward to baby season. Maggie used to go on overseas holidays in October every year with a friend - but now she makes sure her holiday is earlier in the year so she has returned by the time the babies start coming in. This time last year we had 8 -10 babies on the airer from the starvation event, bushfires and heat stress events in the Shoalhaven. And I had Piccolo come in at 2 weeks old just after Christmas and then Baldrick came in 2 weeks later. This year I've been babyless for a week now.

An absolutely delightful farewell for our lovely Guinness. You’re right, it’s miraculous the way he’s grown from a scared little helpless traumatized scrap the size of a duck egg to this big, confident, thumb-boxing, skedaddling bruiser with the huge beautiful wings. Miraculous. And to think, he would not be in the world without rescue and care. I LOVE Maggie’s terrific T-shirt. It’s a sentiment I can get behind. Good wishes for Freya’s surgery tomorrow.

Five weeks is long even for a human and must feel like forever to a dog, who lives in the moment. According to my human friends who have had joint replacements, hips healed faster with fewer complications than knees.

Guinness has some serious issues and I thought he might be blind; he didn't engage or look into my eyes; the didn't interact with me personally; Maggies said she couldn't bond with him because he just didn't interact. I took him to an ophthalmologist, who was happy to see him for free; she dilated his eyes so she could look in the backs of them, and she said there was a virtuous bloom; the fluid from the back chamber of his eye had leaked into the front of his eye. Somehow, her dilating his eyes meant that the fluid went back into the correct chamber, and without 24 hours he was a totally different bat; interactive, tracking us with his eyes and not just listening to use and what we were doing. She fixed him; I let her know he was fine, and she didn't be live he was the same bat. IN the 2 weeks between visits, he grew so much and became such a live wire, he was a different boy.

He became a little darling; he was cared for and loved but he didn't bond or look at us before his eyes were dilated for the examination and accidentally cured. The ophthalmologist was very surprised that he was cured and wishes that it was so easy to cure her other eye fur clients.

They don't tend to pair bond as a routine thing, though sometimes in captivity they become exclusive if they have a bond with another bat. I expect it happens in the wild as well. The boys make the babies but they don't help in the raising at all.
