Watch Jameela from Fort Worth, Texas with Kayembe tumbling at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The staff at the zoo has been working with Kayembe so he will be a little more gentle with his baby sisters. I think it is working - what do you think?

Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, Kunda 7/19/23, and Jameela 1/5/24.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). Coltan is mined in areas where gorillas live. Recycling cell phones reduces the demand for coltan, which helps protect these native habitats. Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Couldn’t believe my eyes!! Kayembe must have been thrilled. Jameela , confused! Freddie very watchful. It looked so much like when a young sibling is finally allowed to hold the newborn baby (but w/o the tumbling!!) Freddie knows when to say, “ok, that’s enough for now!” Kayembe has the makings of a terrific “big brother”! Thanks for capturing that, Larry!

Wow. he understands now that she is a baby and treats her very well not grabbing her arm jerking her around very gentle hanging on her as they roll. she’s actually hanging onto him. That was amazing and he just loves her. This little gorilla boy is lonely for a playmate and he’s finally getting one in Jamilia. Pretty soon Jameela and Kunda will be up and playing with poor Kayembe. I feel sorry for him. I was an only child and after 5 years my mother had my sister, then my parents adopted my other sister. All of a sudden I wasn't the center of my mom's attention. I feel Kayembe's pain. 😊

I’m so proud of Kayembe!!! Even when tumbling with her, he kept her secure and safe. She was sure hanging in tight when he stood up and walked with her - lol. It's great to watch an experienced mother handle two young ones. Obviously, Kayembe has been receiving a lot of support from staff and Freddie as to how to handle a baby sister. But I would imagine that this is what they do in the wild also because otherwise all those strong energetic young gorillas would be hurting the group's infants. Kayembe did a fabulous job of playing gently and protectively and Freddie knew when it was time to step in. It will really get fun when Kebi is confident enough to let Kunda join in! I think at that point all the adult gorillas, if they could only communicate it, will be begging the staff to do some babysitting!

They probably won't be mates; even unrelated gorillas that grow up together in the same troop tend to continue to see each other as brother and sister, so even when zoos want to them breed, often they aren't at all interested in each other in "that way", especially not the females and among gorillas it's usually the female that initiates mating. Zoos discovered this decades ago, and stopped the practice of raising males and females together in hopes they would mate as adults. It's probably something instinctive to avoid inbreeding.

That boy is doing what he has been dying to do for days. I think he did an awesome job and Freddie is watching his every move, so Jameela will be ok. Heck if they could get hurt that easy, Kintaro at the Momotaro group would have never survived Gentaro dragging him every where in his younger days. I used to just close my eyes when he took off with him running and cringe. Kintaro survived and is the best little brother.

Jameela seems to be very strong (sturdy) /tall for her age. I remember when I was a very little girl my young uncle would grab me by the feet and turn around in circles. It was so FUN and even though he'd accidentally let go of me now and then, and when the ice pack for my head had melted, I'd go back and beg him to do it again! Grandma would get so frustrated with us!
