Baby Gorilla Thandie And Her Dad Matadi

Little Baby Gorilla Thandie from the Antwerp Zoo has a play near her dad, the Silverback Matadi. If you're new to the channel Matadi is the son of Ozala. Ozala's family is from Twycross Zoo in England and is my main feature on this channel. It has been on my wishlist for quite a while to see her son in Antwerp.
When Thandie slips towards Dad's foot, he opens up his toes to catch her. Thandie continues to play by Dad's leg and he sits there calmly and watches his baby girl play around him. Thandie plays with the straw and is just really relaxed at her dad's feet.
Dad decides to lie down for a bit and holds little Thandi, in his huge arms which makes the little baby gorilla almost disappear. Thandie can't keep still and moves away from Dad's arm. The Mother Mayani takes her chance and takes her daughter away from dad. Something she does quite regularly, but at least dad can get some rest now.

The Antwerp Gorilla Troop:
The Silverback Matadi: Born on the 25th of May 2003 at the Twycross Zoo in England to Ozala and Ti. Ozala, as many of you know is still at Twycross Zoo with her family. Ti passed away on the 26th Feb 2007, the cause of it was a stroke.
Mayani ( The Mate of Matadi) was born on the 6th of December in Barcelona. Mayani got moved to the Antwerp Zoo in 2017 I believe.
Their daughter Thandie was born on 26.11.2018
Mambele was born in Hanover Germany on the 21 Feb 1999 and was moved to Antwerp on the 22nd August 2011.
Beautiful Amahoro is I believe an Eastern Lowland Gorilla born in the year 1990. She has a stunning deep black coat without any obvious single grey hair. At 160kg she is a very powerful female. In comparison, Oumbie weighs 190kg!
Sadly Matadi passed away on the 9th of October 2023, leaving his young family behind. He was such a gentle giant. RIP Matadi. You won't be forgotten. Antwerp Zoo wrote cause of death was "due to a double respiratory infection (COVID-19 and Bordetella) with additional complications."

I've been watching several similar videos of silverbacks with young ones and in every one the silverback behaved just like this. They are amazingly patient and gentle with the young gorillas and they will frequently step in if an older gorilla gets too rough with a smaller one. In the wild the males actually do a lot of the babysitting.

Like I always say - your timing is impeccable. What a sweet sweet video. Very rarely do we see the dads with the babies. How gentle and loving. She's not even as big as his head. Truth be told, I was wondering how long it would be before mom came along. Gorilla moms don't seem to want to share their babies. Thank you for a great video.
