Actually I’ve got another example of this. My daughter has Down syndrome & when she was a baby, the Early Intervention teacher said Kelly should learn sign language because children with Downs learn language at a slower rate. So our whole family learned it. I took a class & came home & taught what I’d learned to my husband & 2 sons. Kelly is 42 now but she still uses sign if she can say the word. She usually gets her thoughts out one way or another.

I could understand what my kids were saying by the time they were two, we were having a lot of little conversations about what they thought of their little world. I taped a conversation with my son like this when he was about two, thinking it was all nonsense. Playing it back, I realized he had put in all the words he could, filling the rest with noises to make it sound like a real conversation. Excellent and clearly natural technique used by the father. - acknowledging, encouraging, posing questions. Most people would intervene and try to get the child to form a word BUT here the child is learning 'how' to converse - listen, explain, respond, timing and so much more. The word formulation will follow but this is allowing the natural conversational development of the child. Perfect!
