Vocal Solo with Jazz Ensemble - Grade 3
This familiar holiday classic is sure to be a hit with all audiences. Often performed as a vocal duet for a girl and guy, this versatile arrangement by Paul Murtha will also work as a vocal solo with tenor sax playing the guy vocal part. In addition, optional parts are included allowing the duet to be performed using flugelhorn (or trumpet) and tenor sax.

Birch Tree - I don't know why all the comments have their names in front, but I might as well do it too.

Energy of the articulation provides a great motion and start to song. Could use more dynamic change and expression. Seems slightly monodynamic.

articulation is key to making this work -- in the solos and in the band!

Kaitlyn - I really liked the articulation they used on certain notes, contributing to the amazing style of the song. I would like to include that articulation while playing this song. I think there could have been a little bit more energy throughout the song, but still the song was great. The intonation and tone through the piece was very good. Overall, a great performance!

James- I really like the accents in the backgrounds. The phrasing makes this sound really good. Balance will be hard, especially because our soloists play instruments that will want to blend with the rest of the band.

Chris - Well balanced over all. (Bewteen the singer and the instruments) The saxophone articulation could be more precise. Good performance!

Josiah- I love this! The band did well, I'm not a huge fan of the vocals but that's because I'm biased towards the older version of the song. The band was very together and had great tone quality!

Yes, since this was written for JH or HS bands they adjusted the words to fit, like they do with Musicals for High Schools.

Keller - I could feel the cold! The melody and harmony sounded great. The intonation of it was good. I think it lacks some energy. Other than that it was a good performance all around especially the balance of the band. I would like to add their good balance to my playing of this.

Josh- The tone quality of the brass was perfect for the feel of this song. Dynamics were well planned-out with respect to the singers. Saxophones gave it some serious background energy I enjoyed. Gotta love those PG lyrics, made me want a "soda-pop".

This song always makes me smile - it's mostly about the melodic content --- the lyrics are cute to me, but I'm from an older generation that didn't look for evil intent everywhere.

Keith- I think the balance between the singers and band is a little off, maybe its just the recording process. Trumpets really take the audience into the song.

Claire: Once again, we may have to be more careful about balance since the solos are instrumental. I like the interaction between the two singers and how they respond to each other. The articulation is very nice, all the short notes are clear. The little sax solo is also really nice.

Joey- the saxophone section sounded very smooth. The rhythm section did a good job staying together and not out playing each other or the band.

Jacob Robblee- Beginning felt a little slow, but i think it works The long hits were really good together The fall-offs were gentle I like when the band comes in to play the melody Love the muted trumpet solo
