I've studied kingfishers at lakes local to me for years and even filmed inside their nest: • Amazing Footage of Kin... So when I heard that one of these kingfishers was injured, I set out to rescue it.
You can watch more kingfisher rehabilitation films in this series: • Kingfishers | Rescued ... and find more rescue films here: • Rescued & Returned to ...

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Injured kingfisher recovers
This kingfisher was only a month old and had just fledged. It isn't possible at this age to tell whether it was male or female. It had flown into a window and had a head injury. It was also suffering from shock. So I took it home and placed it on a heat mat where it could be left in quiet warm and safe until morning.
Feeding a poorly baby kingfisher
By morning the kingfisher looked much better, but it was hungry. Kingfishers naturally catch their prey by diving into water and I wasn't able to replicate that so I had to force feed it. I fed it sticklebacks, caught especially for it. A kingfisher can eat up to 10 of these fish a day.
ID ring
The kingfisher recovered quickly, but before I let it go, I invited registered British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) bird ringer Jean Thorpe to come in and attach an ID ring onto its leg. This ring has a unique number engraved onto it which will ensure that this bird can be identified for the rest of its life.
Back into the wild
The kingfisher was ready for release after a couple of days so I took it back to the lakes. When I got there I could hear the other kingfisher fledglings and the parent birds calling in the branches, so hopefully it will be able to return to its family where its parents will care for it.
Parents take over
Kingfishers only feed their young for a few days after fledging, so just in case this young fledging's doesn't get fed by its parents, I make sure it gets a good feed to see it through its first day and night. After that it will need to fish for itself.
Flying free
Watch it take a moment to survey its surroundings and then lift off! This is the best part about rehabilitating wildlife.

Great job, Robert! That kingfisher is a wee beauty! No doubt it was suffering from shock due to concussion and likely would not have survived without assistance. I found a mallard duck on the side of the road that was lethargic. Her mate was nearby. She must have been brushed by a passing car. I took her to the vet clinic for observation and after a few hours they called and said: "You can pick her up but beware! You won't know it's the same bird!" She recovered and turned feisty. She was raring to go! I took her back to the same location to find her mate for a reunion! I hope the pair raised a lot of healthy ducklings over the years! 💕

How lovely to see this bird recover and be returned to its home area. It's mesmerising to see the beautiful colours close up. I found out recently that the kookaburra is a relative of the kingfisher. They are a similar shape, but bigger and with muted colours. When they are not doing the full 'laugh' for which they are famous, the other quieter noises they make are hilarious! Thankyou Robert.

💕 Many years ago, I unexpectedly spotted a truly exquisite, yet unusual bird perched alone in a tree just outside my kitchen window. This extraordinary bird was focused intently on the creek below, which afforded me enough time to observe & make mental notes of it's lovely characteristics. I later identified him as an adult, male, Kingfisher. At the time, I had no idea what this magnificent bird was, but felt certain I had been blessed with a moment quite rare... having NEVER noticed a bird quite so beautiful, or unusual, in this area (SW Ohio, USA). To this day, I am so grateful to that beautiful Kingfisher who stopped in the woods in my backyard that day & waited patiently to "go fishing" in my little creek. He will always hold a very special place in my heart, as I KNOW it is that one glorious Kingfisher who deserves ALL the credit for my discovery of my deep love for birds. Because of him... I became curious about the birds in my area. And from that moment on, I have not only loved watching them, but I also protect & feed them & provide them shelter. I know I will forever care for & love with all my heart, the wide variety of sweet, beautiful feathered friends who visit & reside here in my own backyard. And I KNOW... IT IS ALL BECAUSE OF YOU ~ dearest, most exquisite Mr. Kingfisher, whom I will remember always & will love... forever.🙏♥️🇺🇲✌

Thanks for the helping the bird Robert. Wishing you all the best. I wrote this poem about the kingfisher: Make Me a Kingfisher! If I could be a bird, I'd like to be a kingfisher. Who doesn't want iridescent aqua-marine feathers that flash electric in sunlight!? Then there's that big, long, fat, beak; size does matter! Don't forget about the symbolic significance of being king of something; that must feel grand! I'm not too crazy about the prospect of eating raw fish all the time, but the whole being able to fly thing should more than make up for that. And I love the water! Yes, Make me a kingfisher!

I used to walk my wee dog up Linn Park in the middle of Glasgow every day, Linn Park is based around the River Cart and is a very small area of wildness hemmed in by housing, but every now and again walking by the river I'd see a sudden flash of blue and orange dashing by and I'd realise I'd just seen a kingfisher, it made my day. We also had woodpeckers, mergansers and mink and I'm sure I once saw a firecrest. It was tiny like a goldcrest but it a streak of red in its crown. I'm absolutely sure it was a firecrest!
