The scientific name of the kit fox is Alopex macrotis, it is one of four extant fox species within the genus Alopex, the others are the Corsac Fox (Alopex corsac), the Arctic Fox (Alopex lagopus), and the Swift Fox (Alopex velox), it is shown that the Swift Fox (Alopex velox) is the closest living relative of the kit fox, both species encompass the subgenus Pseudofennecus, referring the similarities between the Swift Fox (Alopex velox) and Kit Fox (Alopex macrotis) having independently evolved with the six extant foxes within the Fennecus genus native to Asia and Africa, the Alopex genus is split into two extant subgenera, the nominate subgenus Alopex with the Corsac Fox (Alopex (Alopex) corsac) and the Arctic Fox (Alopex (Alopex) lagopus) and the other subgenus Pseudofennecus with the Swift Fox (Alopex (Pseudofennecus) velox) and the Kit Fox (Alopex (Pseudofennecus) macrotis), both the Corsac Fox (Alopex corsac) and Arctic Fox (Alopex lagopus) are larger than the Swift Fox (Alopex velox) and Kit Fox (Alopex macrotis), members of the Alopex genus are referred to as white foxes due to their usually white, pale, or peach-looking colors.
