Baby Maisie Plays With Chimps Lola & Violet

MAISIE UPDATE: Baby chimp Maisie is currently spending her time in a social grouping that includes adult females Bunny & Raven, and their daughters Lola & Violet. This week, the group spent some time in the indoor chimp habitat together - it was Maisie’s first time exploring that space! She confidently crawled around, and youngsters Lola and Violet showed her a thing or two about how chimps play. Chimpanzee troop dynamics are complex and take time to develop. The Chimp Team continues to take Maisie’s integration day by day and monitor the chimps’ behavior to guide the process.

This was a heartwarming sight, watching these babies interact and hug each other! To see little Maisie playing with the other baby chimps had me smiling through the whole video, and it is just amazing how they display almost human like behaviour. Kids will be kids I guess, no matter the species.

Yeah but it really sucks that she is back there with them but with no mom or surrogate mom of her own...baby chimps stay with their mom's for about 7 years and I cannot believe they didn't send her to another zoo where she could have a surrogate chimp mom...no one to carry her around, or hold her, etc??

They posted that she met Abby but that it didn't go according to plan, whatever that means. It sounds like they're going to try to integrate her without a mom.

@@TealCamel yeah I read the same thing, interesting to see they put her in the enclosure already. Possibly the bond with Abbey eventually worked out? I can't see them putting her in the enclosure and move forward without a mom, she will need a mother for the next 7,8+ years. Would love to know what they ended up doing...

Abby as a surrogate didn't go as planned, so now Maisie is spending her time with mothers Raven & Bunny and their infant daughters Lola & Violet. She sleeps in the behind-the-scenes area with the other chimpanzees and receives a bottle from her keepers multiple times a day through the habitat's mesh.

Baby Maise is so cute and I love how Lola and Violet came rushing over to play. I really really really hope they are able to find a surrogate mother for her. It would be so lonely for her without a mom to protect her like the other babies have.

Well if they were living in the wild then they would not be very likely to live very long at all. When animals such as chimps and gorillas are so terribly endangered and the human threat to their lives in the wild is so huge then I think it is perfectly acceptable to provide them am awesome living space in captivity. These chimps have always lived in captivity for several generations and they are provided with everything they could want to be happy with the exception of complete freedom -which most really good facilities these days treat chimps as almost human by allowing them to often make choices about a lot of things to help make up for it. As is obvious here these animals are very content and happy, they are living in groups that emulate wild chimp groups, allowed to mate and have babies, provided with food and medical care, lots of enrichment, safety from predators but even more importantly, safety from humans. As long as a facility is providing them everything they could want and need, emulating their wild life as closely as possible, providing them with as much freedom of choice as possible and the animals are obviously happy and content then the pros majorly outweigh the cons when you consider how it is impossible to keep them safe in the wild right now. So these chimps ARE "living their best life" with far less suffering and heartache than they would experience in the wild!

@@PrimateProductions we all know that they are supposed to be in the wild because they are meant to be there. they have survival instincts to survive in the wild. it is us, humans that is responsible to the extinction of many animals in the world. i just hope that we learn how to respect other animals because we all have a role to play in balancing our eco system! animals also have emotions. imagined your self put in a cage like that, I’m sure you wouldn’t like it! very relatable now we’re expecting pandemic, we cannot go outside even if we want to! we get bored in just few days but animals like them are in the cage for several years!

I am also very much aware that it is humans that are causing their decreasing numbers...I also know that it is other humans that are working very hard to prevent them from becoming extinct by providing them with the closest thing to freedom buy while keeping them safe in captivity. I have also made the comparison to the current world situation...and since you pointed it out you should also keep in mind that though we don't like to stay inside if we want go survive it is necessary....same thing in their case. You also cannot compare their situation to ours in the sense of them missing freedom and being bored because these animals have never known anything but their current situation, have no knowledge of "freedom" and due to that the fact that they are kept very busy, provided with everything they could possibly want or need (other than freedom itself) and they live very rich, fulfilling social lives with their conspecifics in a way that closely emulates what they would experience in the wild it is really no comparison to people who are bored because they can't go do the things they want. In addition, maybe you should not assume that ALL people are bored with staying home because my family and I have actually enjoyed that part of the current situation!

Maisie if I remember correctly had one surrogate mum and tone that really spent the most time and Maisie is super close to her surrogate father ...that little friends hugs is "sisters " I don't know massive is pretty loveable . I have only seen one chimp that smiles and laughs and gets along well.. I have tried to find updates on her but nothing yet. Chimpanzees name is Poppy

The only chimps I’ve seen rock back and forth like that are ones that are emotionally traumatized, usually by lack of stimulation and being alone for prolonged amounts of time

If you had ever experienced any time with chimps then you would know that when a baby chimp this young is just beginning to crawl and move about like she is they very frequently get up on their hands and feet like that and rock back and forth. It serves to strengthen their arms and legs and helps them to learn to balance. It is extremely common at that age and looks VERY different than the type of rocking a chimp will do when suffering from trauma and stress. Policy and procedures for caring for a hand reared baby ape at any reputable facility in the US does not allow for a baby to EVER be left alone while in the care if humans. They are not even allowed to be placed down in an area separate from their caregiver for even a few minutes...so no cage, box, playpen..they must be able to freely reach their caregiver at all times so there is no concerns regarding that!🙂
