Orangutan Outreach and our partner, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF), are happy to give our supporters this behind the scenes look at the precious babies. Many people have been commenting about the lights in the video.... There are a few reasons for the lights to be on. First of all, the babysitters need to complete the night time routine including preparing bottles of milk and distributing these to the babies. The caregivers need to see properly when feeding the babies to make sure everyone is fed, and to monitor how much milk each baby drinks. Next, the lights are on while the babies fall asleep so the babies can see each other and their caregivers, so they are not scared. Remember, all these infants have gone through the trauma of being separated from their mothers. Seeing their friends and babysitters as they fall asleep is reassuring. Once the babies are settled and the caregivers can see they are all tucked in safely, the lights can be turned off. A tired baby will fall asleep in daytime or nighttime, lights or darkness. Likewise, a sudden noise may momentarily startle the babies, but background noise and activity does not keep them from sleeping. What is most important for the babies to sleep is that they are comfortable. That includes having a full belly, seeing and touching their friends, or being rocked as needed. This leads to your question of why the room contains no leaves or nests as in the wild. Remember that the babies spend all day in the forest, surrounded by the leaves and trees. It is here in nursery school that they are introduced to the idea of building nests of branches and leaves. But they are too young to do this on their own. They would not be able to make a nest for themselves in the baby house, and if the caregivers were to make a nest off the ground for them, the babies may fall out. Remember, at this age they should still be clinging on to their mom while sleeping in a nest. The priority is helping the babies feel comfort and security. This is done by having them sleep in baskets filled with blankets (and other babies!) for softness and warmth. The older orangutans at the care center are provided with branches and leaves for making nests in the night houses if they wish. The infants, however, just need a small bed (basket or hammock) to keep them safe and secure. As far as the sterile environment, please know that the baby house is part of a quarantined area. Strict health protocols are followed and the area must be easy to clean and disinfect. Infant orangutans that have been taken from their mothers are especially vulnerable to illness since they do not have the nutrients from their mother’s milk. We often have sick babies that need to be cared for in the baby house. In addition, the entire baby house can easily be cleaned while all the babies are in the forest during the day. Thanks for caring about orangutans! We would be very grateful for your support! Please visit the Orangutan Outreach website to learn how YOU can help the orangutans! redapes.org {:(|}

SusanMc 6946 Do your homework. The palm oil industry has devastated the orangutan population. Look up the video of the orangutan trying to fight off a bulldozer destroying its habitat. And to those saying palm oil is in everything - bullshit. Read the ingredients before buying and just opt for something that doesn’t include it. There are ALWAYS alternatives. Do boycotts really need to be explained to people these days? Choose not to buy products that include palm oil and eventually manufacturers will choose not to include it. It’s used in contrast to other oils because it’s cheap. The less people buy palm oil products, the less it has any cost incentive. Give. A. Damn. People. It really doesn’t take much effort and you’ll sleep better at night - as will more baby orangutans with their own mothers.

I amazed at these, wonders of creation. Their eyes, like human babies eyes, have that bright spark, the purest form of life. Just taking in the wonders around them, full of expression and transparency. But even as they grow older, their eyes have a matter of fact-ness, and casual comfort with life, that we don't. An admirable quality in many ways. Stoic. Even Regal I tried to figure out why that is, and I determined it is because they are rocking their Schumann, and we don't even recognize it, amongst the clutter of our bombardments.

To be fair, in nature orangutan dads are not involved in any way with their kids. They're not like gorillas where they live in a harem with a few moms and a dad who is directly involved, or chimps who live in a tribe which includes their dad. Female orangutans seek out a male only when its time to mate. Then, the pair has a little love fling for several days and they part, and thats it - the Dad is gone. The baby orangutan lives with its mom inseparable from her side for nearly a decade, several years of that time actually nursing. Female orangutans sometimes stay near their mom after they grow up and go on their own and occasionally see her, but males depart and live a solitary life forever (aside from their occasional love trists). That said though - totally breaks my heart too, as none of this makes it any less painful that they've lost their mother. The bond between orangutan baby and its mother is stronger than any other animal known aside from humans (and who's to say their bond isn't as strong as ours or stronger?)
@redapes
@redapes 5 ай бұрын
When females grow up they establish their territory contingent to their mother's, with each sister staying in the same area. When the males reach puberty, they wander off in search of adventure (feeding and females!). This is one of the biggest problems we face when relocating displaced orangutans after their forest has been destroyed (for timber, palm oil, mining, farming, etc.). The only areas of forest they are familiar with are GONE. It takes time to adapt to new areas of forest... and if there are other orangutan residents already present, there will inevitably be problems with hierarchy... especially if we are talking about males. Females can more easily adapt-- as long as the resident females allow them to be there. Maybe you'd like to adopt Gracia? :-) She's an orangutan matriarch in the Sebangau National Park who lives alongside many generations of children... Gracia is amazing! redapes.org/gracia

I guess the lights go out at dark? And it's just me, but I would have forest sounds playing low in there. Get em used to it, and a random noise may not be quite as startling to them. They are adorable ❤ and the folks tending to em do a fantastic job 🌞

They are so human like but they are not humans and are not pets. This seems like a good program to prepare these orphan babies for life in the wild. They are sweet and they deserve a good life!!! Im so happy to hear of the success of this program.
