Nintendo eventually established that Birdo is female since they made her and Yoshi a couple in Mario Tennis, but she was portrayed as male in subsequent Nintendo games, as well as in Japan previously. Same kind of goes with Vivian from Paper Mario TTYD. She is female in the U.S. version, but was originally meant to be male.

Yoshi wouldn't eat mario but there was a glitch that if you make yoshi eat a dragon coin while you ride yoshi then spin jump out of yoshis back at the same time then yoshi eats mario but that doesn't count
