Sailing Project Atticus

Күн бұрын

When we first started exploring the Caribbean by sailboat almost 8 years ago, we had a huge amount to learn. We had to figure out how to live in such a small space, how to feel comfortable in foreign countries, and how to constantly deal with the dangers of sailing from one remote anchorage to the next. That first year of sailing was full of intense experiences, both intensely good and intensely bad. And through those experiences we learned that sometimes doing things the hard way and learning to become competent at something difficult, can reap rewards beyond our wildest dreams.
And in so many ways I feel like our choice to raise our newborn baby on a sailboat has brought us back to square one. We have once again chosen to do things the hard way, a way that might seem at times like we are just banging our head against a wall, but a way that I believe may once again lead to rewards that we now can’t even fathom.
But all of that is far in the future. Now we’ve got to figure out each aspect of raising a baby on a boat and hope that our desire to sail the world survives this crazy transition.

As myself being a parent since 1972, your experience is normal. My first reaction after coming home was realising the responsibility for the tiny little human that could do nothing without me. It all comes together but not before tears, frustration and sleep deprivation have wrecked your emotions. Support is critical and here Mothers show their shining glory. You are doing fine.

The only advice I could give you as new parents is try your hardest to enjoy every moment because before you know it she’s all grown up and off on her own life journey and it feels like it all happened in the blink of an eye and you can’t even remember the hard times you only miss all the good times, congratulations on your new family

But don’t be hard on yourself when it’s hard and frustrating and exhausting!
@spinozareader

You're not killing your old self, you're refining your ever-growing self; peeling back new layers of you. Everything the two of you are enduring is so familiar to all of us who have taken home a new, noisy, teensy human. It's so exhausting and daunting, at first. The both of you are champions. You're such good friends to one another through it all. And you manage to find tiny pinches of humor and joy when you can. Isabella is a lucky girl. I can't think of a twosome more suited to having a new infant in a boat cabin, and pulling that off with grace. In the States, we fetishize babies. By that, I mean we tend to "over-'cutesy'" them--to the point that we gloss over how demanding they are. This does a disservice to new parents, I think. It tends to make them even harder on themselves. p.s. Babies need to cry sometimes. It's not essential that she be quieted at all times--as long as she's fed, burped, and dry. (Though this is tougher to take in within a boat cabin.)

That "overtly positive" experience you are not experiencing now is something parents experience IN HINDSIGHT. Every new parent, no matter how "positive" the initial days, is too wound up in the instant, the stress, the moment to moment crises, to feel positive or negative or relieved, or even thoughtful. The first two weeks are zombie days spiked with moments of panic. Tell us how you feel when you are holding a daughter who just said her first words!

Been a dad now for 31+ years and the indescribable joy of my daughter's arrival beats anything else I've ever experienced. Walking her down the isle last year was kinda cool too! Given that, I fail to see how anyone could describe the overall process as negative in any way. Overwhelming? Scary? Tiring? Sure, but still the best experience of my life and it isn't even close.

Jordan: Speaking from a Dad perspective: hang in there. It gets better (or at least manageable!) Fatherhood is the best, worst, most inspirational, most annoying, and ultimately most important thing you'll ever undertake. No one feels ready or capable-- you just do it. You are equipped, and you'll make it happen. You'll have triumphs, and you'll make mistakes. Do your best, and get it done! You'll be awesome!

I appreciate your frankness, not glossing over the difficulties. Great edit as well, can't imagine how you pay attention to the detail of presenting an interesting video while dealing with the big stuff of fatigue, worrying about "why is she crying", and how are we going to live on the boat?

I have watched both of you become more interesting. I have watched both of you evolve. I have watched both of you build two boats. I have watched both of you build a relationship. I have watched both of you build experiences. I have watched both of you build a channel. I have watched both of you build a special love. I have watched both of you build a unique life. I have watched both of you build a new child. And now I am watching both of you build a new family. I can't wait to see both of you build wonderful new stories into the life you have both built. And so your story continues. Build delightfully.😊

Your baby is adorable ❤ I had triplets 26 years ago and was alone with them during the week days! I’m not going to lie it was difficult and scary. They were premature and very small and fragile. They had to eat every 3 hours so I was lucky to get 1 hour of sleep in between feedings! This went on for 5 months. My husband couldn’t help much because he had to drive 2 hours there and back ! Anyway I got through it. Fortunately I don’t require a lot of sleep! My point is they melt your heart more and more every day❤ Time goes by so fast enjoy every minute! I learned at lot from the nurses in the NICU. If you want any suggestions feel free to message me. Good luck and safe sailing 🌹😊

Jordan, you have come SO far in terms of being honest and genuine on camera. Your vulnerability shows tremendous sincerity and (honestly) strength that will serve you well as a father and as a husband. Your experience of feeling overwhelmed and even depressed after Isa's birth are congruent with my own experiences with the birth of my own two children. You'll get there. The time FLIES by, and before you know it thirty years will have passed. All the little detail stuff that seems so important now will not be remembered. Keep at it. "A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor..." You two have become so incredibly skilled in your relationship together and in your lives; you will also become a skilled father, and Des will become a skilled mother. It's inevitable.

Looking so far into the future gives anxiety and a feeling of overwhemness but the worst is you stop being in the present and missing the small stuff. You'll adjust . Everyday, Isabel grows, resets, and each day you'll gain a few extra minutes a nd moments. Your doing great, stop being so driven, deep breath in...gratitude out. In the big scheme of things, your 4 divine souls having a human experience on an eternal time line. Enjoy the ride (sail). Be Blessed.

Jordan, Dez and Isa, far be it from me to give advice. Nevertheless, here I go: It is apparent to me that you have the right tools and skills to be great parents: you are patient and loving with each other, you are there for each other, you are dedicated to each other...work on being more patient with yourselves. You got this, take it minute by minute, day by day, week by week. Work on the most immediate need, forgive yourself for not being perfect (who among us is) Remember, all things pass. You already know this about passages, same for life. Know that there are hundreds of thousands of us out here, whom you may never meet, praying and sending best wishes for you and Isa. Your unique style, openness with your supporters, and heartwarming videos are a blessing for me. I find myself getting emotional and a bit choked up watching and feeling your emotions. Who would have thought a YT channel could evoke emotions like these....well, remember "one step at a time", forgiveness , patience and love each other.

Mine R now in their thirties. My neighbors son in law, a six four Marine combat vet, was a basket case when their first daughter was born. I told him to hang tough and it will get easier when she can put three words together to form a sentence. He ran with that. Adapt and over come. About five years later and another daughter he came to me and asked if I remembered telling him..... I busted up laughing. I looked him in the eyes and replied, " I am sorry Jar Head. I lied! It never gets easier. But you have done well Gunny and they R growing like weeds!" And so, It never does! But the rewards R beyond the dreams of Averroes. My condolences and hearty Congratulations.😍

Our son at 2 weeks traveled by train to Venice Italy. It was not to bad, we lived north of Venice. We also did some sailing on 30 meter in the Mediterranean. The day I was taking my baby girl home, I heard the WORD "G.I.-G.O." (like Guy-Go?!) When I asked, "What does that mean?!" - and then I remembered hearing my first computer term, "Garbage In - Garbage Out"; and I understood right away that I was holding in my arms the equivalent of a blank disc: whatever I hoped to see become of this new little human was going to rely totally on what I 'data' I entered. I wanted her to have a healthy, happy, kind and loving experience - so that was my responsibility and task - to plant good seed, in hopes of raising a fruitful person. Hope that helps you with your responsibilities as new parents: I pray for you to have grand success, joy, peace, and prosperity... and a lot of FUN!

Jordan. You took on some highly insurmountable things in your life. Building a boat basically, learning the lines, the Ocean, repairing things and all the rest of the things. Yes, the old you is fine, now you're a DAD. Now you won't take as many chances because you are in LOVE with a little girl. I had one of both. The sleepless nights go away and you do get used to it. Now you have another challenge...another Chapter in your lives. Everything right now is PRECIOUS time, time for pictures, time to watch a little girl become who she is going to be and you guys get to watch it. Enjoy because it passes quickly. You two will have to change most everything...grow up to be Mom and Dad. Just think of all your friends coming on board and how much they will ignore you because of your little precious girl. Lol. It will be fun again...just in a different way. And now you have a new crew member!!! Just wait until she starts walking ..running...exploring. If she's anything like you two... you're in for some extreme FUN.

That bouncy chair was a life saver for our gassy baby ....pay attention to what you eat and the gas if breast feeding....I found sleep deprivation was my root for all evil...grumpy..no patience...sad...but you are great parents and help each other get rest...She is beautiful and such a blessing to you and your life...we are empty nesters now and I so miss the days you are going through right now....don't sweat the small stuff and enjoy every moment because shortly it will be a blur.....

A few of things I learned as a parent. 1: people have been having kids for thousands of years and, against our best efforts, most of them turn out ok. 2: You’re not going to mess them up like you are messed up, you will mess them up in new and unique ways. 3: enjoy every minute of it. Maybe not in the moment but, years form now the sleepless nights (and days) will become just another funny story you can embarrass them with. ❤

Unschooling mom of two grown daughters here. (One's an avid sailor now!) Infancy is intense but super fleeting...it only FEELS like it goes on forever. Parenting is a journey in itself, it's not all smooth sailing but if you let it, it can be the most amazing and fulfilling adventure where you'll learn and grow as much as your child will! It'll blow your mind! Wait and see! All the best from Nova Scotia, Canada.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful stories with us. Congratulations with the safe arrival of your beautiful baby girl. My husband and I watch quite a few KZbin boat documentaries and we love watching you guys, you are our favourites. We built our 65ft Ketch back in 1993 and have been sailing and living on board for more than 20 years. You are doing a wonderful job. Life is a journey, not a destination, so enjoy the journey. God's richest blessings to you and your beautiful family.

Being a dad of 2 girls, the beginning is the hardest. Exactly as you said, take one step at a time to get up the mountain. I would say forcing a positive mental attitude on yourself helps. You can always find something wrong or to be upset about. If you search for all the little positives, you’ll have a happy life. Y’all are doing awesome.

Keep the bouncy seat. It’s a lifesaver. Also a baby swing. There’s an awful amount of gear you will only use over the first 6 months then you can get rid of it. What a life she’s going to have with two amazing parents. Great grandfather here. When baby naps one or both of you need to nap as well,

You were so lucky to have the family there to help out during those first tough weeks. Your experiences are perfectly normal. It is few births that happen as expected or as planned! You two will make great parents and your daughter will take to life onboard just fine. Be patient and loving and the rest will come in time as it should. Don't worry about things in the future as much as enjoy and appreciate the present.

you guys are doing great!!!! I cried watching you guys. Your baby girl is absolutely beautiful! Isabella is so lucky to have you both as parents and to embark in this amazing adventure. You are going to show her the world and so many amazing experiences that the rest of us only dream of. Reach out when you need help. I am sure there are many grandmas, myself being one, who are willing to give you a hand anytime you need one. We love you. Thank you for sharing your life with us. 💝

You guys appear to be doing great! In the next months and years to come...into toddler time...when you are exhausted and everything seems to hitting the fan all at once and anything you try doesn't work to console her...just hug each other and cry...and then look at each other....AND LAUGH! Eventually...it all works itself out. 🥰

Don't feel feel like you are confronting a barrier. Feel like you are confronting a huge meaningful experience.Your children will be an enormous part of your life and they will not be with you as long as you realize. A big congrats you two, she is lovely. Our girl had colic for 3 months, it was horrible but then one day it left and there was this new little girl again. The lack of sleep you are feeling gives you a new understanding why sleep deprivation is used as a torcher technique. Just remember two things baby’s love schedules and Desiree what you eat the baby eats. And Jordan you will become a wiz at getting projects done fast… Cheers you two.

Cool to see you guys documenting your adaptation. Everyone's story is full of changes. Some are planned, some not planned. I really appreciated hearing you guys express how you're willing to let go of some of how you wanted to view yourselves and allow the evolving you to emerge. Isa's going to have an exciting life! (edit: just wanted to add that I'm a 56 yo dad of 6 kids, and I'm a very different person than I was 30 years ago when I first got out of the military, haha!)

Hang in there! As my firstborn joined our family I was like you. I felt like the ”ground service” only. But day by day the bond comes to life. Especially after like 6-10 moths. I was in panic the first weeks. No one told us anything about parenthood, just the deliveryprocess. But it made my life complete, and has ever since. My only advice is to spend as much time as posible with the kids, always. Time flyes and to enjoy every day is a must. You will miss the cuddling afternoon sleep sessions later on. My kids are now 9 and 6. We just came back from snowboarding this week. Thay love the summertime on our sailboat and the arcipilagio around here. To see them grow, both fysicly and mentaly is my biggest adventure yet. We also did not have a nice experiance the first time giving birth. But at the end, it’s the outcome that matters. Looking forward to see the upcoming adventure of raising a kid onboard. BTW, Sweden is really nice during the summer since you already is in the med.

We have watched y'all from the start . Child raising is one of the most daunting things you will ever do in your life. I understand being overwhelmed, but I promise, this is the best investment (and the scariest) you'll ever make. Y'all got this. Meanwhile, we'll just watch, feeling like secondary grandparents and cheering you guy on from a distance. Our daughter is y'alls age and we're blessed with two grands. I'll tell y'all the same as we told her and our son in law, just do the best you. can and lead with your heart. If you do that, you'll raise humans as good as you are.

I struggled really hard with the newborn stage. I didn’t like it (I felt like I had gone to hell) and felt really guilty about not liking it and just surviving. An older mom gave me permission to not like it and assured me there are other stages I’d love. My girls are 17 & 20 now and it’s been an amazing journey. Only the first 3 months were difficult. Congratulations you’re great parents!!

What you are experiencing is really normal. Always remember that your baby is on a steep learning curve and so are you both! You will soon find out that nothing when it comes to babies is "set in stone". Roll with it, adapt daily. This is the greatest adventure of you lives and your both doing it right! BTW: so stinking cute!

Just relax and take day by day. You worry too much about what you will do when. When that time comes you will know what to do. You don't have to be perfect, it's ok to make mistakes. I was 17 with my first and did just fine. Issa has 2 loving parents and has all she needs. RELAX and enjoy each moment

you two are rockstars doing this on a boat! I have two teenage boys born less than 2 years apart. Those first four years we don't remember a thing because of sleep deprivation. The ability of you two to document her early life is amazing. Stay strong, you two are doing great!

You are very brave. Thinking about the other boat-babies, La Vagabond, Delos and Ran, they all stayed on land for the first few months. You are true boat people. I wouldn't have this courage. I'm impressed.
