We did the whole minimalist thing on Atticus one and we had some amazing experiences on that boat. But the desire to enjoy the comforts of modern amenities was always with us and we experienced a strong pull to someday move ashore.
Our goal with Atticus 2 is to build a floating home where with fewer compromises and where we can raise our family for years to come, and where we don’t feel like we’re missing out by not moving ashore.

Jordon you are an excellent teacher! Desiree your support and encouragement of Jordan is “invaluable” to your family. Keep up the good work little family and thanks for being such a positive inspiration to all of us, young and old 🥰.

Another great video. The explanation of capacitors and in-rush current was very well done. The fact that you share your difficulties, as well as your joy, makes it easier to relate to you and your family. Another reason your videos are so compelling is the intelligence. both mentally and emotionally, demonstrated by both of you. Then you add in the extreme high quality of the videos and sound and you end up with one of the best channels on KZbin. For this older guy, you ARE the best channel on KZbin. Also - I loved the segment with the camera mounted to Osso! It would be great to see a little more of that in the future!

I always enjoy your videos and appreciate your honesty. A couple remarks: The wire size (3/0?) for the jump to the switch was completely unnecessary. Recall that wire resistance is proportional to length and inversely proportional to the cross area (R = constant * L/A ). With such a short length like 5", you would have been just as fine with 1AWG. I suggest getting a smart BMS. I can connect to my BMS via bluetooth and read it out via RS485 and a raspi. In an emergency, you can by-pass the BMS (preferable with a smart shunt like the one Victron sells)

Great watching your little family evolve. I wish all parents realized that children go along with your dreams and culture, while meeting their needs, of course. You don’t have to stop living adventures. There are definitely difficult seasons, but you handle them with the best patience, love, and grace that you can, but you keep making your own sunshine and make necessary changes as needed. Having a solid family mission will keep everything in perspective to make necessary changes or decisions.

I am sure that a spare management system would be expensive, but you need a power station or two to run some lights, the refrigerator and other necessities for short periods of time if the start battery discharges in which case you won't be able to use the engine. We have a couple in our home for power outages and we take the larger one in our camper when on the road as it has come in handy several times. A resister circuit around the relay switch is a great idea. At this point, one would assume that Jordan is somewhere between a master electrician and an electrical engineer...

Jordan thanks a lot for sharing the BMS problem. All of us upgrading (or planning to) to Lithium will benefit from that experience. Having a possibility to fall back on a backup battery (starter battery or a separate one) is vital. Imagine if that failure happened while sailing in the night in strong winds and current and fog, in heavy traffic and shoals (you know Mr. Murphy). One thing you should mention is that we can't simply switch to a Lead acid backup battery and continue using the same charge profiles from the charger, solar or alternator, as they all have been programmed for Lithium, not lead acid. I mean we probably could, but not for too long otherwise we could damage the backup battery. I'm no expert in boat electricals, but I think there is something here.

I’ve been doing solar setups for a while now and I always opt for LiFePO4 batteries that have a built-in BMS. I’ll tie all batteries into the system via a Lynx Bus Bar then a shunt followed by a Lynx Distribution. In this fashion, if one battery has a fault and is disconnected by its internal BMS, there is still power available from the other batteries.

Interesting electrical issue - and frustrating! In my experience inrush current is a lot - but typically not as many orders of magnitude as you were discussing. I see this often in commercial HVAC, where a compressor may be rated for 15 amps nominal - but the inrush current on startup may be 50-60 amps for example. Have you considered having a multimeter on board with a non-contact amp-probe that has the ability to measure inrush amps as well as continuous current? That can be a highly useful diagnostic tool in these situations, and can help you spot an issue before it becomes a real problem (like by melting contacts or capacitors!). My Fieldpiece SC440 will do that and its less than $200. Something to think about.

Because the electrolyte in Li batteries is a volatile esther the BMS is always going to fail safe to complete shut down. You're right to have a redundant system in place for the eventual failure. Clark on Temptress has created a very cool "bank manager " combiner that allows less fragile, lower energy density old school battery types to coexist with Li banks and share charge. Might be worth a look!

Yes, boating should be comfortable, I believe. What happened there is why I decided to split my system into a combination of AGM’s an Lithium, so far 6 kwhrs of each. The boat runs off the AGM’s which are recharged from the Lithium via a 100 amp DC to DC converter (100 amp Top Systems TS1600). The Lithium is primarily charged from the solar panels and wind generator. It’s not all fully installed yet so I can’t give a performance report. The other reason for doing it this way is because I was concerned about lightning strikes. This combination has a good amount of redundancy built in and I will explore how to rearrange the components quickly in the case of a failure of some sort, just as you were there doing. Having just one engine start battery for instance i suspect will become 2 batteries. But thanks for the explanations, that is all good information and some guidelines on working with BMS’s. It’s lovely to see Esa growing and taking a grip on life. Happy Cruising.

Great episode. I would like to raise a general caution flag for all of 4 of your sakes safety. Watching the scene where you repeatedly turned the BMS on and the power would come on for a moment and then power off. That was the safety part working properly and preventing an electrical fire. Give your setup, I shudder to think how quickly an electrical fire would get out of control. Hence the caution. The old saying you can’t see the forest through the trees. I would strongly recommend that you take a step back and perform a comprehensive review of your onboard electrical systems. I would also say that such a review be performed by a top gun electrician from the island that is well versed in AC and DC, especially in regards to inter- connectivity. Perhaps the marina might have a recommendation. Next, I would have a conversation with a fire marshal. They may have insight or first hand experience with marine electric fires and their root causes, lessons learned, etc. The final suggestion would be, if you don’t already, review and practice your fire drill for all eventualities. At minimum, the big scenarios. 1.) A parent is below deck with child and the other is on deck, a fire separates you. 2.) Both of you are on deck, baby sleeping below deck, fire separates you both from baby. Etc. You get the idea. Love your channel and so glad to see everyone is safe and doing well.
