Yes he does. That's what a lot of abusers do. Usually the two work together well to keep the abused motivated to do what the abuser wants. It's a very coercive influence and they know it.

Power dynamics are a big factor in toxic or abusive relationships as well that just don't get enough attention. When you're up against someone you know has a lot of name recognition and or is able to motivate other people against you, it's unlikely you're going to feel you can take on someone like that as just one person who is being abused.

I agree. The person just has to be willing to distort facts to manipulate others against you, and if the others want to believe the lies for whatever reason, then you can easily be isolated and "brought to heel". My sister is this type of person, and she succeeded in isolating me from the rest of my family.

One of my favourite little details in the series is how we see Donnie using cocaine, as he hits a stressful point with Martha. He starts sneaking lines here and there, getting that buzz. When you find out what had previously been done to him, how the predator was the one to offer him cocaine before Donnie had ever got into it himself. He said okay because he didn't feel he could say no. The predator used substances consistently as a part of his grooming and of his abuse. So those earlier shots of Donnie using cocaine while later dealing with Martha, it's him re-enacting trauma right down to the deepest level. He learned that these feelings and situations come with X y z, so now that part has been triggered, subconsciously he himself acts out that x y z, to complete that cycle. Which is an excellent nod to how trauma actually real life impacts people. Not only do we seek to retraumatise ourselves to gain some sort of control, but we do these other behaviours that you wouldn't think are related, such as drinking, smoking, drugs, sex, some people literally just find themselves needing to lie on the floor or lock themselves in a bathroom (because that's what they had to do the first time something traumatic happened) it's so deep.

Yes, totally agree and, sadly, most people don't understand that and blame the victim or minimise the severity of the abuse

@@retroactivejealousy-worldl1805 Yeah trauma breeds trauma which breeds trauma and so on. Hurt people go on to hurt themselves and those around them. They don't always become the predator, but every victim will act like or carry on traits of the predator, it's not their fault, that's just what happens. Esp when we are in a lot of pain. We revert to what's comfortable, and for traumatised humans that can often be toxicity, either to yourself or to others or both.
