Baby Led Weaning is the best thing we ever did. My 16 month old eats shrimp, fish, beef, chicken, turkey, veggies, fruits and all cheeses including brie. All thanks to your baby led weaning videos with Gaines! We did take a infant CPR class when our son was 6 weeks so I think that also made me more comfortable going this route, but it's seriously the best. I recommend it to all my new mommy friends.

Adore your family and parenting style, but I have to say: the process of CHEWING is extremely important to the digestive process. Don't know the ins and outs of 'baby-led weaning' but it actually makes no sense to present foods the baby is unable to gum or swallow without pain or danger. Is there a reason foods are not pureed? Is there some kind of rush to teach a young infant with no teeth and/or solid food experience to swallow whole chunks?

Lark Bird I'm not sure the ins and outs either, but most of it they aren't swallowing. They are getting a feel of the textures and tastes of different foods! And I think they swallow small little pieces!

They are only giving him a couple pieces of solid foods a day just to test out textures and flavors. He is still primarily breastfed for nutrition. You can also chew certain foods with gums and saliva is also used to break down food. Again, this is just to introduce them to the process of chewing and getting used to what their mouths can do. Spoon-feeding is just giving them flavored mush that's over-processed and full of sugar (that is, if you don't make your own baby food).

Madge, I get what you're saying, but puree is also a 'texture' and also provides varied tastes. Well. Just for me, I would never do it. But each parent has their own ways.

If you want to know more details Google is a great resource, but actually baby led weaning teaches them to chew their food vs just swallowing purees. Babies gag reflexes are much further up than ours so when they gag the food isn't even close to going down the throat. We did BLW with my son and he is now 16 months old and the best eater. He eats shrimp, fish, beef, chicken, turkey, veggies, fruits, all cheeses including brie. Every check up his doctor asks if he has an textures he doesn't care for and we always answer no. She's been astounded at how well he eats. BLW introduces them to different textures vs everything just being pureed.

Been there! My little one didn't do well with solids till about 9 months then he caught on. Stuck with nursing mainly until a year. He was just slow to eating. He always wanted all the food but would gag. I'm so glad we did it over puréed foods though! He is a great eater over at 13 months. Now we just do squeeze packs occasionally when he isn't intaking many vegetables.

BLW is awesome! I did it with my daughter, who just turned 3, and she's such an adventurous eater! She loves trying new foods, and will eat almost anything. Her favorite food is curry, Indian or Thai, she loves it all!

I'm really starting to understand this Baby Led Weaning training & getting the ideal of what it's teaching the Baby how to eat.. There is so much controversy about what to feed kids and when to do it...they are grown people, they are making educated choices about what they are feeding their children. It's a great way to get your baby used to different textures, techniques for how to eat different things and also getting to know the thing they are gonna put in their mouth for the rest of their Life. I'm a nurse and a young (52 yr old) granny of 10 grandchildren. I also had custody of a couple of my grandchildren at one point when they were very very young. It looks very neat but I was always taught that you only introduce one food at a time so that if the child exhibits any signs of allergy to something a parent will be better to tell what particular food caused it. Also, I thought that meats were too complex and to start out with vegetables. Please explain more about this type of weaning for the general public so that we can become more familiar with this practice. I can actually see the benefits for the baby to learn their own gag reflex.....your family is super cute and if I was their granny I would spoil them rotten!!

As a wife of a pediatric nurse I would really caution people to do there research before jumping on the baby lead weaning band wagon. Weigh the pro's vs the risks. Talk to your pediatrician about it. Your child starts choking you better hope you know infant cpr.

It's not a bandwagon, it's how children have been fed from the beginning of human kind until the 20th century. And is still how children are fed in many other countries/cultures. Feeding your child purees is the real bandwagon, one who's negative repercussions are now being noticed as enough time has passed since their introduction. As someone with a degree in Childhood Development, including extensive study into childhood nutrition, I also advise people to do their research before automatically thinking purees is "normal".

whossoul it is very much a bandwagon and is NOT how babies were fed up to the 20th century. In the past and in most cultures babies are nursed solely for long periods of time. The generations before us also mashed up food and gave it to us. I have 5 children, 4 of which have learned to chew and swallow properly and eat a variety of healthy and nutritious food after being fed puréed foods. I can't be the exception to the rule. I respect people's right to do what they want with their baby. I am just imploring people do their research and don't just read everything supporting BLW. With a husband that see's this stuff day in and day out it is truly not worth the risk should your baby start choking on a chunk of food.

I totally agree. I've been a nanny for 22 years and I would never ever start any of my babies out with baby led weaning. they don't chew any quicker or better than baby food fed babies. and why even take the chance of your baby choking. It's just another "fad". Thank God I am CPR and first aid certified

I appreciate your concern, but we have absolutely talked to our pediatrician about this. We would not have moved forward with Gaines or Brooks without doing so. He is completely on board and was fine with us introducing solids this way. It is not as uncommon as you think, and not a "bandwagon" method. I mentioned that in the videos that are linked in the description. :-)

It's great! My now 3 year old was baby led weaned and people are always complimenting me on what a great eater she is. She isn't picky, she tries any new food you present her with excitement. Her favorite food is curry and she loves spicy stuff...she always asks for "spicy sauce" (aka tabasco) on her eggs. That's the kind of eaters BLW raises!

my nephew first time with banana's and we found out that he was allergic. 😞 great your little one his eating so well.. question since my nephew has allergy problems with food and he is 8 months, they are nervous to try this method. due to if he gags are throws up we have to call Emergency due to his allergic reactions.
