For us Chinese, it's common to give our newborn babies a haircut at the end of the first or fourth month. It's just our tradition and we will use their hair to make it into those calligraphy brushes for keepsake. The haircut is totally harmless to the baby if you use the correct tool. Babies hair grow out well after the haircut too.
