@@mariagiakalis4615 Actually Maria, I’ve read that the Fishermen consider the Seals their competition & have out right shot at them if they come near their Boats, Slinging those perfectly Neck Sized floating packaging straps, old or damaged nets over board, would be just another way to lessen their competition!!😓…. I also read that something about them having some type of Hunting Season for sport & to reduce their numbers!!??🤔… Can’t really remember the exact details, As it’s been awhile since I read it??🤔😓… But Seriously Sad, Sickening & Infuriating, I probably subconsciously tried to block it out!!😓🥺😢

Thank you for your kind words! While we’re deeply committed to helping the seals, we know our work is just a small part of a much bigger battle. Our rescues highlight the urgent need to address the root causes of ocean pollution-like our reliance on single-use plastics and the gaps in law enforcement and recycling efforts. By sharing these stories, we hope to inspire real change that goes beyond treating the symptoms and starts tackling the problem at its source.

I am always amazed at how many people I see chose not to recycle, even when the bins are laid out for them. They just do not connect with how important being connected to our choices are. Humans talk about mindfulness like it is an optional practice. Our world needs us to take the time to rinse, break apart, and dispose of our refuse, in a truly responsible way. The bylaws are not a request to ignore.🌍🕊♻️

It seems like there have been a lot more incidents with packing straps. Does this occur with cargo being lost overboard (accidentally and deliberately)?
@OceanConservationNamibia9 күн бұрын
Plastic straps are used on longliners for bait boxes and factory trawlers to secure the catch in boxes.
@williamdewit543215 күн бұрын
Off course you guys do a wonderful job. I still wonder why you guys do not: 'pet' these seals a little just before entanglement (instead of talking them calm). Just a little. You guys first crawl to them like a predator, then run/hunt them like a predator, then kidnap them with net and giving them a doctor visit without their consent as evil people do, and then these creatures may suddenly realise their fear of death was not appropiate but given a life back. I also think that 'petting them' a little might, sometimes, help for not needing that amount of force to keep them at place.

How about getting some GoPros, some wet suits, some snorkling/scuba gear..and diving down for film of what all this garbage is that keeps ensnaring these seals? Will that kind of footage step on some toes?
@franceshorton91814 күн бұрын
That's an excellent question. In all my years of following OCN I've never seen anyone ask specifically about that... There might be more involved of course, e.g divers swimming with seals at feeding time might be too disruptive or dangerous, and be banned. Here in New Zealand our marine mammals are protected and there is a limitation on how close humans can approach.
@thinking630714 күн бұрын

There have to be fisherman that are now aware of your work in the area so please, quit using our oceans as a garbage dump and cut the packing straps. It’s an easy fix to a massive problem. The volume is much too massive to just be items blowing off ships due to wind. The packing straps come directly from the fish packing plant. Please cut your straps. The rest of the problems are a bit harder to fix, but all of it comes back to fishing activity. OCN is showing us the problem so if you are in this industry please help. The oceans belong to the animals, we just borrow them.
