Back in the 80’s I did this on the cuffs of sweatshirts! You don’t have to turn under anything…..sew easy!

The 1 was your stitch length. The 3.5 was the stitch width.

How big should a swaddle blanket be?

Knit fabric naturally curls in on itself. So I’m just curious how necessary you think trimming off the excess (as mentioned at the very end) is?

Hiya. Did you backstitch beginning and end ?

How big the stitch is called stitch width. How close the stitches are is called stitch length. The stretchiest edge is crosswise grain or width. The less stretchy side is lengthwise grain.

Does it have to be folded over or can it be done on the edge?

What are the measurements for the fabric?

It really just depends on how big you want the blanket. This cactus one didn't last very long. Once my baby was like 2 months it was way to small to swaddle her in. I got 1 yard of fabric times whatever the regular height is on the fabric. I would recommend doing a bit bigger though like 1.25 yards.
