It was time for part 2 of our Crocodile, Eco Adventure - this time, with a friendlier animal - the Olive Ridley Turtles. Originally we couldn't fulfil this part of the adventure, because of a torrential downpour, but on Monday, September 30th, between Hurricane John creating havoc on the Pacific coastline of Mexico (thereby making a mess here in Oaxaca state), and another potentially nasty storm brewing, we made it out to La Escobilla.
Once again, Treasures of Huatulco with Lalo at the helm, drove us out to La Escobilla beach, which is a 25km long beach, that is one of the most important turtle nesting beaches, not only in Mexico, but in the world. The Olive Ridley Turtles arrive here in masses, year after year to lay their eggs. They often arrive in huge masses, by the thousands per hour, as they remember this being their birthplace, so they return to nest.
Many years ago, members of the community here, used to poach turtle eggs for an income, but now, they have shifted to helping the turtles. By becoming conservationists, they welcome tourists, to do turtle releases, which educates visitors, gives them an unforgettable experience and in turn, brings an income to the families involved in these projects.
This is hard work however, and Señor Sóstenes Rodríguez-Reyes, from La Escobilla shared his in-depth knowledge with us. Since some of us didn't speak Spanish well enough, we had Lalo, our tour guide help us by translating and explaining what the cooperative does with ensuring nature stays in balance, while allowing this turtle species to strengthen up in numbers.
We were impressed by the hard work put in by the families of this community, and the dedication they had for nature.
We are also grateful, to once again have been able to take part in a phenomenal tour with Treasures of Huatulco!
