So epic! Amazing sound track and even more epic Board. There’s no way anyone by the name of Ashton could ever possibly handle such a rip stick of this caliber

When you make a surfboard it’s best to glass first and seal/hot coat then install fins before polishing. This way you don’t get any wood dust stuck in the foam and prevents contamination of foam as well.

Thanks for the input. Do you do that with all fin types, or just a specific system ? I’d argued it depends on the fin system. I use futures for their strength and you definitely want them under the glass. For center fins using Bahne boxes and similar I do it after lamenting and either before or after the hot coat depending on how I’m feeling. I FCS 1s I agree with your statement. FCS 2 I think can go either way, but I refuse to use that system 😂.

@@callalilycollective I hear ya lol i’m learning from a guy who’s got 25 years experience and I’ve only seen them use the future fin boxes and that’s what he does and like an idiot I just assumed it was the technique for all finboxes! I’m still in the learning phase I’ve only made a few boards so far.

@@froggydude1549 interesting. Do they laminate another layer of glass over the fin boxes once they’re installed then? I’m trying to picture how a futures would look being installed after glassing without another layer of glass on top of them. Any link to pictures of your teachers boards? I’m barely graduated into what I would consider novice board build from a beginner board building (12 builds so far).

@@callalilycollective yeah pretty much. Just small fin patches from what I’ve seen! It’s better looking because if using colored resin the routed colored glass looks cleaner when you can see the finbox through it than with the colored glass covering it. the patch makes up in strength. So it’s more visually appealing and just as strong! So the tail gets two layers, seal coated, hot coated, routed, fins installed than fin patches and final coat over fin patch. I’m no expert but from memory I’m sure that’s how I saw it. I’m learning from Mike Carol who owns stoke surfboards brand. He is really good person and very patient. If you were to ask he’d be able to do a better job of answering your questions than I ever could.

@@froggydude1549 awesome thanks for the response and makes sense. My single color resin tints never looked great around the boxes for that reason. Resin swirls hide it just fine though, and now I mostly paint my foam before glassing. Pretty sweet you got such an nice mentor. Would’ve been nice to have that. Luckily I have a few shapers I talk to, and swaylocks is always there.
