In this video Matt Holladay shows us his way of installing a fabric inlay on a longboard. This process can be used for any size board along with any type of pattern cloth. We will have a few more videos up soon showing some pin lines getting done along with a final polish on this board. Stay tuned!

@@FiberglassFlorida one more thing, would it be possible to do a inlay with say like, a one inch strip of red cloth or ribbon) running parallel along one side of the stringer and a white one inch strip of cloth or ribbon (running lengthwise) on the other side of the stringer? Is it gonna be very difficult for it to remain a straight line and stay flat during laminating due to the narrow thin size of such cloth dimensions??

wonderful it's a great effect. my only request is more specific info on the 'glass mix. i.e. its 2.5 liters w 10 oz hardner Because its 74° @ 70% and this gives you 45 minutes time before it kicks. that kind of specificity would really help a newb like me because your kinda warm day might be a whole 'nother ball of wax for us in different parts of the globe. That said - what a classic example you've given us it looks so so good. Many thanks, I've learned of some great points to bring to my projects from this video.

How much resin do you use to laminate fabric as compared to laminating, say, 6 oz cloth for the same size area? Just about to do this myself (great timing for your video - thanks!) and want to get a ballpark idea for roughly how much more or less resin I can expect to catalyze than during a standard lamination.

I saw the board on Instagram, beautiful! Can I just ask why you lay the glass, the peel it back, put the resin on then lay it over again, rather than just putting the resin on top of the cloth. Thanks James.
@FiberglassFlorida
@FiberglassFlorida 4 жыл бұрын
jhb0510 He lays it out dry to get the pattern lined up and symmetrical on the stringer, the puts his pins in to keep it in place and then lifts it up side by side to resin it on. The reason for this is because the resin doesn’t soak up as well as fiberglass would so he gets it on both sides insuring to have a fully saturated piece of cloth.

Matt, I've done about a dozen such inlays but have always just put the cloth under the lamination and never have had any problem with the process, and haven't experienced any delamination later during the life of the board, and in several cases, felt like it made the board (when on the deck) just a bit stronger. Any reason not to do it that way?

@nolenvlogs2697

Yes you are right, thicker cloth creates a problem. Do a search for quilting shops around the area you live. Go there and pick up a thin cloth that does not stretch. Not like a T-shirt material. Thinner is better. Walmart’s sell this style of cloth. Lady’s use them to make quilts. Shouldn’t be too hard to find a shop close to you. You buy by the yard.
