Lyrics:
There was a girl I used to know
She was oh so beautiful
But she's not here anymore
She had a college degree
Smart as anyone could be
She had so much to live for
But she fell in love
With the wrong kinda man
He abused her love and treated her so bad
There was not enough education in her world
That could save the life of this little girl
How come, how long
It's not right, it's so wrong
Do we let it just go on
Turn our backs and carry on
Wake up, for it's too late
Right now, we can't wait
She won't have a second try
Open up your hearts
As well as your eyes

This song actually saved my life. Was in a very bad situation, with kids, and after listening to this song so many times (due to the similarities it had with my life) I actually decided to leave because I didn't want end up dead, I wanted a 2nd try at having a life. So thank you both, for saving my life, and in turn, my kids lives. Will always appreciate and admire you for this xxxx

Back in 1997 I was just a schoolboy, and CDs were expensive, so if I bought it, it meant I really LOVED the song. Yes, I bought this in 1997. The chorus, with that keychange, is just beautiful. Babyface is a good singer, but Stevie Wonder is an INCREDIBLE singer, and I remember hearing Babyface say on the radio that he considered Stevie Wonder the greatest singer of all time for him. The harmonics in Stevie's voice are incredible, and his range as well. In 2008 he came to Australia and on the day of his concert I bought a ticket and went. Totally spur of the moment. Great show. So glad I got to see a legend like him in my lifetime.

Listening to this now, I wish I was older when my mother went through the abuse. But I was just a teen. It took me to reach the age of 17 to stand up to him for my mother. I'm now 40 and she's long divorced him. And she's such a happy person.

When a 5 minutes video speaks volume. It is so emotional, and sad that it still happens and not reported. Especially, the negative impact it makes on small kids. It's a deep scar that remains in young kids that results a lifelong pain. Any type of abuse should be reported to authorities right away.

awesome :) I'm a human trafficking survivor who listened to this song and sang it loudly to tell teachers in my school that I'm getting raped by tons of pedophiles. they just ignored me and said "not my problem" but I felt like at least Babyface cared about me enough to write a song like this so once I'm dead from murder I will get to hang out with Babyface and his friend in heaven (because most rapists also tried to kill me with knives but failed). Anyway this song gave me hope. And then I escaped. I was recaptured and my family who had been trafficking me set up a hidden video camera somewhere in the room and in the bathroom which they told me about but I couldn't find, where I was being held captive to make videos of people raping me and to convince themselves I consent. But I never consented and I played this song on my computer at maximum volume along with other songs about abuse, rape, death, survival and slavery and sang them at the top of my lungs as well...along with some very screechy high opera stuff by Vitas that was intended to hurt their ears...until they couldn't stand it anymore and they set me free. my stepdad was like I watched 60 hours of footage and you never had any sex and all you did was sing about death. I was like no I sang about abuse and slavery and about you giving me my freedom. when will you set me free? Then eventually he was fed up and he set me free. So now I'm listening as a celebration of escaping all that torture. It is a great song :) It makes the most hardened and deranged psychopaths like my stepdad who is a Satanic-worshipping cannibalistic rapist to feel guilty and want to let you go. :) Yay Babyface and Stevie Wonder. :) Thank you :) :) I actually sang most of the songs well, with the right notes, as I have been in choir most of my life, but I was trying to be particularly obnoxious and bad when singing Vitas' Opera No. 2. LOL. And this is how a choir girl fights for her life ;-)

I didn't even know he knew of the song until our family of 4 were on a "road trip", and Ryan began singing it. Then he asked his dad to play it on the sound system. He knew every word. He didn't sound bad either. lol. He was very serious and rather emotional. After he sang, my husband, sons and I had a great conversation about abuse and violence. I remember thinking 4th grade was young to be so moved. You must have been exceptional in the 4th grade too! I'm sure you still are. Thanks for making me remember.

In 5 minutes this video/song completely sums up the anguish and pain experienced by anyone in an abusive relationship...wife/husband /child. And also of the helplessness of those around that desperately want to act/speak out or do something....yet end up feeling its better to just keep quiet. Please don't, the damage, especially to children NEVER goes away. Like others on here, I had an abusive violent father...the scenes with the child at the dinner table and the mum preparing to run and getting caught brings back so many memories and tears YEARS after they happened. BUT this music connects and heals...we seriously need to get back to producing work like this. The world needs it.

This song never leaves me. Everytime someone says two people are ina domestic violence situation, another is quick to say, stay out of it; that is their business. But I think that's wrong. Victims are weak and yes they may go back but it's never willingly, it's because they are often brainwashed into thinking they are nobodies by the perpetrators or they are too psychologically weakened to stand on their own. They truly need you to speak out. This song to me is the most beautiful song Stevie and Babyface made. I love it, the vocals are beautiful and the message forever powerful - dont turn your back, you truly might save somebody's life. Prayers to all in this situation. Forever a classic. When music was truly music.

The most dangerous time in a violent relationship is when the woman leaves. That's when the abuser realizes he is losing control and the only way for him to get it back is to kill the partner, which is the ultimate act of control.

“There’s no enough education in this world to safe her life” This is so so true not only for domestic abuse. If we were a little bit more emotionally intelligent and less selfish we would live in one better world.

What a powerful and so so true song, escaping from an abusive ex-husband myself how many times I wished and prayed for someone to just jump in and beat him till his eyes were black and swollen and break his ribs and body apart like he was doing to mine, but I did escape with my daughters because I came too close to doing just what she did before he done it to me, but there are so many out there that don't get to escape, but he left life long scars inside and out, in the song it says what kind of man puts his hands on a woman, a coward that's what kind of man he is...

When I was little boy my Grandma had to gather our things, in the darkness of night to get away from my biological father. My beautiful 17 yr old mom was terribly beaten, in addition, unthinkable things he did to her, I now know after all these yrs, if we didn't leave my mom would've been killed by him. Im 44 now, boy I thank God for my humble, fragile family. Lov this song. Husband's lov your wife's!

I used to watch this video as a kid and i was born and raised in a house with a hole lot of verbal abuse and other things. No physical abuse against my mother and my brother and i, but believe me i still carry a baggage of pain. It still makes me cry sometimes, when i hear them shouting in the video... Brings back a lot of painfell memories.

There was a girl I used to know She was oh so beautiful But she's not here anymore She had a college degree Smart as anyone could be Had so much to live for But she fell in love With the wrong kinda man He abused her love and treated her so bad There was not enough education in her world That could save the life of this little girl How come, how long It's not right, it's so wrong Do we let it just go on Turn our backs and carry on Wake up, for it's too late Right now, we can't wait She won't have a second try Open up your hearts As well as your eyes She tried to give a cry for help She even blamed things on herself But no one came to her aid Nothing was wrong as far as we could tell That's what we'd like to tell ourselves But no, it wasn't that way So she fell in love With the wrong kinda man And she paid with her life For loving that man So we cannot ignore We must look for the signs And maybe next time We might save somebody's life How come, how long It's not right, it's so wrong Do we let it just go on Turn our backs and carry on Wake up, for it's too late Right now, we can't wait She won't have a second try Open up your hearts As well as your eyes I on occasion met that guy It's been a feeling deep inside Something about him wasn't right The way he proves himself a man By beatin' his woman with his hands Oh I wish she'd seen the light (Hey) How can someone like that Call himself a man (He's not a man) Coz In reality he's far more less than that And we cannot ignore Whenever we see the signs 'Cause any kinda of abuse God knows it's a crime How come (how come...), how long (how long...) It's not right (it's not right...), it's so wrong (so wrong...) Do we let it just go on (just go...) Turn our backs and carry on Wake up (wake up...), for it's too late (too late...) Right now (now...), we can't wait (we can't wait...) She won't have a second try Open up your hearts As well as your eyes...

This is chilling every time. Some things... we have to consider our business. When the young lady stop the man from knocking on the door just hurts because it happens all the time. If you don't feel comfortable stepping in/ speaking up then call the police! ESPECIALLY if there is a child involved! Florida has some of the highest numbers of children who have died because there was no real follow through in the home where there was domestic abuse between the adults. Let's Love one another enough to make a move.
