It didn't make the cut but I want to give a shout out to Vir showing his true colors yet again. He doesn't just take the letter from or even thank the ranger. Instead he pauses and says a heartfelt "I'm sorry", acknowledging the ranger's own humanity and deep feelings about what is happening with Sheridan, rather than treating the ranger as just a messenger. Between this ranger scene, and Vir's touching Londo story during the dinner, actor Stephen Furst really brought his A game to the series finale.

Vir is the kind of person who could take Erskine's serum and not be corrupted by it. He's got a dark streak (as we see when he waves at Morden's head on a pike), but it's never unjust, never cruel, never self-serving. Morden's actions led to millions of deaths just among the Centauri and the Narn, and billions more across the galaxy, and he did it all with a smile. He deserved what he got. Vir takes no joy in death or suffering, but he's still one to be glad to see justice served. Vir could've been Captain Centauri.

I’ve pointed out the same thing. Babylon 5 was always going to be destroyed at some point - the question was when, and why. JMS made a comment in one of his online posts: “‘The King died, and then the Queen died,’ is not a story. ‘The King died, and then the Queen died of grief,’ is a story.”

If I could change one thing, It would be to replace the CGI for the Vision and have the explosion inverted, so it matches the finale. That way there is even more symmetry. The explosion did happen. There was a great war. There was much death. But B5 was not destroyed because it failed, but because it succeeded. Also, I remember being on the forums and everyone pushing JMS to make a cameo. He kept saying that he already knew where he would put in his cameo, he did not need help. Of course, he would not tell, but everyone tried to guess. It was still early in Season 3. It was not until the end, that we realized he that he had hinted all along, especially when the show was having troubles and he would remind people that he would be there until they made him turn the lights out.
@rudolphclancy8293
@rudolphclancy8293 Жыл бұрын
@Michael Halbrook The early, ten year arc would've seen Babylon 5 destroyed by the Minbari warrior caste in Year 5. They'd have launched a coup d'etat after finding out the reason for the surrender at the Line and reignited hostilities with Earth. Sheridan, Delenn and their remaining allies would then travel back in time to steal Babylon 4, for it to become their new mobile base of operations to fight the Shadows, being rechristened Babylon Prime in the process.

As I remember, the producers shot two endings to the series, because of the unpredictability of the production. This was the second one. The first one was done before TNT picked up the series. It had G'kar and Mollari having one last fight, and something about Mollari facing a dark future, or death, because of a parasitic alien invader that was controlling the minds of his race, leading them to destruction. I remember the production value of the episode was a bit rough. Maybe it wasn't aired at the time, because TNT revived the series? I remember seeing it on TNT's rerun of the first four seasons, in sequence. This "final" episode gave the series a pretty dark ending, not uplifting like this. That part of the timeline was tossed aside (as I remember), once TNT picked up the series, and gave it another season.

And Lorien literally named after a Valar, and going into the West... hot damn.

I would have liked a 3-parter with this to get more reaction from the finale. "The One is a fan of the post." I love this quote! 😂 Put it on a tee-shirt and see if it sells. 😊 On a more serious note, I think it was JMS who said that John and Delenn were the Arthur and Guinevere of Babylon 5. I loved that final, medieval imagery of them as Delenn watched the sun come up. Truly moving. Thank you for your reaction. It was a joy and delight to experience this show with you. Beautiful and thoughtful and deeply moving.

For those of us who either experienced Babylon 5 before and knew what was coming to those on the journey discovering it with you now it was just pure beauty. So you are aware the reason why this episode has Susan Ivanova in it was because this was actually filmed at the end of season 4 where the fear was that B5 wasn't going to get a 5th season but when it was renewed, JMS saved it for the finale of Season 5. I call this the Epilogue to the series. It ties in so much together. I also love the tribute they did at the end for both the cast as they entered the show and their last known status as well as thanking those behind the scenes. I really wish more faith had been put on B5 to have given us everything we would have wanted (the Telepath War). If you can track down the digital copy, i'd recommend getting a copy of the 3 issue series comic for B5 called "In Valen's Name" as well as a short story titled "Space, Time, and the Incurable Romantic" all written by JMS. I think you will like them.

Did you know that JMS wrote a short story about Susan and Marcus? "Space, Time, and the Incurable Romantic," published in the magazine Amazing Stories, Issue 602, Summer 2000. Find it if you can - a wonderful story, almost like a "post-credits" scene!

Pre-episode. I rewatch this episode every time another cast member passes beyond the rim. If you don't cry during this episode i'll be very much surprised. There are at least 6 points i can think of that will break you. Post-episode. Glad you recognized JMS, him turning off the lights makes it so mean much more than if it had been anybody else. Even after watching this finale many times over the decades it still gets me every single time. There has never been a better final episode to a show ever made.

John went to Coriana because in "Day of the Dead" Zoe gave Lochley a message from Kosh for John..."When the long night comes, return to the end of the beginning." There is nothing that I can say that has not been said by all the other comments, so I will say 'See you on the other side of the Gate!'

While he had that message, I always had the impression that he simply knew that was where he needed to go. He didn't leave for B5 because he was told to, but because he knew he was supposed to. He still carried a little of Lorien and like Lyta, echoes of Kosh that had become part of his identity.

This is the B5 episode I've seen the most often. I was terrible at avoiding spoilers and knew much of what would happen, but on my first watch I was still in tears a minute into it. I watched it on the last Saturday evening of my summer break that year... and then, for the entire following academic year, I saw it every Saturday evening. Mildly obsessed, to put it lightly. At one point I could speak along with the entire episode. I mentioned last episode that B5 taught me to say goodbye. When I visited my dying grandma, I said good night to her in the end, not goodbye. (Of course, this is a callback to Minbari not having a word for goodbye.) And the evening of the day she passed, I turned on this episode because it helped me process. B5 taught me to grieve, too.

Ah, Medusa. You haven't lost anything. You've experienced one of the greats. I wish more people would be open to this show. It has a slightly touhg entry, but once you get into the world, man... There's nothing like it out there. Babylon 5 is pretty singular. It has some similarities yo Star Trek, but not quite. It has some similarities to Battlestar Galactica, but not quite. It's.... It's pretty singular. That moment where Sheridan and Delenn are in that hall and you can feel the tension coming off of Mira. That wasn't just Delenn. That was Mira. She was holding in so much emotion. That woman... What a woman. And his hand touches her shoulder for not even an instant, and she just explodes into his arms. I will always point to Sheridan and Delenn as the ideal that we should all aim for in our relationships. They loved each other and supported each other through everything. They never gave up on each other. Ever. And it wasn't always easy, but their love lasted a lifetime. We could only be so lucky. People often say you can't show a couple together and happy, because there's no drama in it... Again, I point to Sheridan and Delenn. We get to see the entire span of their relationship, and all the angles of it. From the friendship, and silliness, to the romantic and intimate, to the steadfast dedication to one another. I love them. I have always loved them, and I have always hoped I would meet my own Delenn someday.. I know you probably don't take requests, at least not on KZbin, but I did want to offer a suggestion for another serialized Science Fiction show. Space: Above and Beyond. It's a short lived, one season, show, and very well done.

It little profits that an idle king, By this still hearth, among these barren crags, Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole Unequal laws unto a savage race, That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me. I cannot rest from travel: I will drink Life to the lees: All times I have enjoy'd Greatly, have suffer'd greatly, both with those That loved me, and alone, on shore, and when Thro' scudding drifts the rainy Hyades Vext the dim sea: I am become a name; For always roaming with a hungry heart Much have I seen and known; cities of men And manners, climates, councils, governments, Myself not least, but honour'd of them all; And drunk delight of battle with my peers, Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy. I am a part of all that I have met; Yet all experience is an arch wherethro' Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades For ever and forever when I move. How dull it is to pause, to make an end, To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use! As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life Were all too little, and of one to me Little remains: but every hour is saved From that eternal silence, something more, A bringer of new things; and vile it were For some three suns to store and hoard myself, And this gray spirit yearning in desire To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought. This is my son, mine own Telemachus, To whom I leave the sceptre and the isle,- Well-loved of me, discerning to fulfil This labour, by slow prudence to make mild A rugged people, and thro' soft degrees Subdue them to the useful and the good. Most blameless is he, centred in the sphere Of common duties, decent not to fail In offices of tenderness, and pay Meet adoration to my household gods, When I am gone. He works his work, I mine. There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail: There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners, Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me- That ever with a frolic welcome took The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed Free hearts, free foreheads-you and I are old; Old age hath yet his honour and his toil; Death closes all: but something ere the end, Some work of noble note, may yet be done, Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods. The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks: The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends, 'T is not too late to seek a newer world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths Of all the western stars, until I die. It may be that the gulfs will wash us down: It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles, And see the great Achilles, whom we knew. Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

There are so many wonderful shows out there that just fall flat on the ending. I can think of very few shows that I think had great endings; plenty of good, or OK endings, some "what the hell were you thinking" endings, but few that were just "wow!" The idea that a show has to go out with a bang, a big, complex, exciting adventure to finish out the run is just a flawed idea as this episode demonstrates admirably. It is just about saying "goodbye". That's it. The result is beautiful, and yes, Christopher Franke absolutely nails it right through to the end of the credits.

Anyone who never cried for a fictional character has never loved one. B5 was unique, because it was the first of the great serials. Soapies kept going forever. Most shows end with a typical episode, and never come back for another season. B5 was designed to tell a complete story in a fixed time, and it did so very well. The whole series was building to this goodbye.

In case you're curious, Ivanova returned because this episode was originally intended to end Season 4. Back then, B5 was told by Warner Brothers that they were not getting a Season 5, so the series finale was filmed using the Season 4 cast. They got a last-minute renewal, so they put the finale on a shelf and used it after Season 5.

A cherished memory is my attendance at my one and only scifi conference in Blackpool, July 1997. Despite the 4 day conference being called Wolf 359, it was effectively all Babylon 5 related with the full cast and main production staff in attendance. It was there that JMS announced that the show had been renewed for season 5. At that time, season 4 hadn't begun to air in the UK, and most people were hyped following the season 3 cliffhanger. It was a wonderful experience. (Another highlight was when there was a fire drill, and the actors who played Bester, Morden and Na'toth entertained us in the car park by telling jokes!)

If you can overlook the early season's graphics, which do improve - it is a show which has stood the test of time thanks to it's wonderful cast, writing & story, , some great direction later on and the music. It was a special time and a very special show! Only Buffy's early seasons score by Chris Beck and Picard S3's reinterpretating & reinvigorating 60 years worth of glorious fanchise music - especially 'Make it So'- match up with Chris Franke's outstanding work imho. Babylon 5 completed it's 5 seasons against ALL the odds. Faith Manages.
