They made the Minbari fight for every inch of space. In my life I have never seen anything like it. They would weep, they would pray, they would say goodbye to their loved ones and then throw themselves without fear or hesitation into the very face of Death, itself. Never Surrendering. No-one who saw them fighting against the inevitable, could help but be moved to tears by their courage, their stubborn nobility. When they ran out of ships, they used guns. When they ran out of guns, they used knives, and sticks, and bare hands. They were, magnificent. I only hope that when it is my time, I may die with half as much dignity as I saw in their eyes at the end. They did this for two years. They never ran out of courage. Did he magically transform into a Captain as he stepped on the station? Did they strip him of his rank when he left his ship then gave it back to him when he approached Bab 5? Whoever researched B5 for this video had never actually seen it either; when the characters of Londo and G'Kar are introduced we're told that the are antagonists because their races are at war, when in reality they were antagonistic for historical reasons from the onset of the series. Any who had watched two or three episodes would have known that. It's a clickbait video, they probably have a very tight budget for each one they produce, so quality is going to suffer. @Smileybeeblevrox5 жыл бұрын
Carlos Hernandez, get your facts straight. Look up on KZbin Red Carpet News TV interviewing Patricia Tallman about St:DS9 copying B5. There was a lawsuit. Before there was a court date, Paramount quickly settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money without admition of guilt. JMS did file, but immediately after he did Paramount quickly settled. How do you think they got the name Dukat and Leeta on DS9 and why DS9 was on a space station and not a federation ship. Paramount stole from the B5 Bible to create cardassians/Bajorans from Centauri/Narns. Star trek continues to deny they stole anything but there was a lawsuit and JMS was paid for what Paramount did.

@@Smileybeeblevrox I am happy with it. We got TWO great shows. JMS was able to make some money on B5. Showed us all how to do a story with a 5 year arc. Television is a better place for him doing it. Paramount took the bible and told the Trek show runners they wanted a new series. Space station, gritter than Trek. It is about the Captain, 2nd in command, and Chief of Security. The Captain becomes a prophetic religious figure. There are aliens who's race has very strong religious vibe. There is a war that builds, takes place and is resolved over the arc of the show. With those details and nothing more, they built DS9. Considered by many to be the best Trek Series. The worst DS9 episodes hold up better than the "average" TOS, TNG, VOY and ENT episodes. I don't know about a pallet full of cash, but what JMS deserves more of is recognition.

Sheridan replaced Sinclair, because the actor who played Sinclair, Michael O'Hare, was diagnosed with schizophrenia. O'Hare was having paranoid delusions on the set during the first season and agreed to step away from the show to seek treatment, even though JMS offered to delay production till O'Hare could get treatment. However, O'Hare declined, not wanting to put the series, and people's jobs at risk. O'Hare died from a Heart Attack in 2012. JMS kept his mental condition secret till after O'Hare's death, but told the fans about it at Phoenix Comicon, 8 months after O'Hare's death, per O'Hare's wishes. @@perfectsplit5515 Like so many other things in the show, the Vorlons had a great storyline. They start out as this mysterious and unknown powerful race, then we are led to believe they are angels, and finally to see them as not much better, maybe worse, than the Shadows; interfering with and manipulating races. It is amazing how Kosh as a character was able to show such feeling and emotion and development, when he is just a man in a costume with no ability to show facial reactions. Despite that, we come to appreciate Kosh, that he is different than the rest of the Vorlons, that he has a personal interest in Sheridan, that he is much gentler to Lyta than his replacement is, that perhaps he even has a sense of humor. Eventually we see that the Vorlons are not indestructible or fearless, that Kosh experiences fear, that he is killed, or as Lyta says "they(the Shadows) tore him apart."

OK, there are a few pronunciation issues - but overall, it's a solid piece and given how the jackasses at WB have made B5 hard for people not already familiar with it to get into the series (up until it finally landed on Amazon Prime) - there's a LOT of potential fans out there who have little idea it exists or why they should seek it out. As someone who was there *_In The Beginning_* - I have to say thank you to SyFy Wire for this; I hope it encourages people who've never seen the series to watch it. And yeah, there are some 20+ year old spoilers in here, but as with Londo's vision of his eventual death - *_how you get there_* is even more important than the spoiler. ;)

She ALSO pronounces Lorien (Lore-E-N) as Loren (Lore-N)when she mentions him. Really......... She also mentions trap doors for characters and mentions SPECIFICALLY replacing Patricia Tallman's character with Andrea Thompson's character in season 1 after the premiere pilot episode. But then FAILS to mention they replace Andrea with Patricia (swapping characters back and totally dropping Andrea) in season's 2-5. Patricia had a WAY bigger character than Andrea's and you make it appear the opposite. Patricia even had MAJOR plot points and episodes centered on her character!!

Babylon 5 has always been one of my favorite sci-fi shows ever. There are so many fantastic episodes, so many fantastic quotes, but one of my favorites I have yet to ever hear anybody ever mention, then again, maybe I've not come across others. In the first season, during a week when the various species are sharing their religions and their cultural iconography, Commander Sinclair sets up an introduction to the Ambassadors, to give them a chance to maybe understand humans better. Sinclair had arranged a representative to be their for EVERY religion of the planet. That all-inclusive simple respect and courtesy was very meaningful to me.

My favorite character was always Londo. He was gray, he stood between the light and the dark, or something like that. It is easy to write a hero (Sinclair, Sheridan, Delenn, even Vir), it is easy to write a villain (President Clark, Morden, Bester, the Shadows in general), it is hard to write a character who always has mixed motives, it is much more realistic but harder to balance and maintain. His character was simultaneously repulsive and tragic, petty and noble. Quite the achievement.

Sorry, but it's really hard to talk about 23 year old "SPOILERS". It's like talking about "Citizen Kane" without discussing the significance of 'rosebud'.
@chadrasor48385 жыл бұрын
It all comes down to who this video is for. Is it for the long time fan? If so, it's not that good because it covers things most die hard fans already know inside and out. Is it for the new viewer? If so, it's not good because it deprives the new viewer of experiencing all the shocking plot twists and reveals while they watch it themselves. And that is HUGE. B5 isn't a David Lynch meditation is atmosphere and mood. Or a sitcom that hits the reset button at the end of every episode. It's a tightly plotted show about characters. Missing an episode is like skipping a chapter in a book. Ans spoiling a plot point is like telling someone reading book and X character dies in chapter 63. As far an you analogy goes: 1) It does not matter how long ago something came out if you haven't seen it. I'll discuss the significance of rosebud all day to someone who has seen the film. But I'd never just blurt out "Rosebud is {REDACTED}" to someone who's never seen it. 2) It's completely possible to talk about "Citizen Kane" or any other movie, TV show, book, radio drama, etc. without spoiling it. I have listened to movie reviews talk for almost an hr about a film they have watched without spoiling a single thing. And, you know what, those are the reviews/discussions that make me want to go see what they're talking about. Their excitement about the subject matter gets me interested. So, yeah, SPOILER! @@timberry4709

Out of a stellar cast, I have to say that Vir was my favorite character. He tried so hard to be a moral compass for Londo, but Londo wouldn't have any of it. I also was a fan of the late, great Stephen Furst since Animal House. BTW, why did the person reading the script call Delenn, 'Valen'??? That was a silly error, compounded by the fact that she later (properly) called Sinclair Valen. One oddity is that she didn't recognize that "We are all star stuff" was a Carl Sagan quote (Delenn was quoting Carl Sagan)

In the very early preproduction designs for the characters, Sinclair was the one who had a beard. Maybe Sheridan's beard was an homage to that. Also, Delenn was originally conceived as being a bluish male Minbari, G'Kar was "Jackarr," Londo Mollari was Londo "Collari" and had short hair, and "Khosh Naranek" was much more physically humanoid but with four-fingered hands sporting claws. Just check out "Early B5" online, and you can see the designs for these and other characters.

I just love JMS as a writer. I got hooked on B5 when it came out, and it instantly scratched an itch that I hadn't realized Star Trek wasn't scratching. By the third season it was easily my favorite over Star Trek and Star Wars. If they ever decide to remake or reboot it, they better be even more faithful to JMS original story than Turner was to the original B5, but I do not know how you follow such perfomances as Andreas Katulas as G'Kar and Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari. You almost shouldn't even try, their characters are almost sacrosanct at this point, as is Claudia Christian's Ivanova character. Can you imagine how heart breaking it would be for some company to remake B5 and get those characters wrong? And a lot of it is due to JMS' writing, he could be over the top at times, but that just made his characters bigger than life, and it also meshed well with the less soap opery parts of the show and made the world and its characters even more believable and fleshed out overall. It has literally been decades and I am still pissed they never turned JMS' comic series Rising Stars into a movie like they were supposed to, or some kind of tv or netflix series, and he also did some great runs on Superman, Spider-Man, and Thor to name a few. The man is prolific and deserves more credit for his contributions to our pop culture.

4 Seasons, not 5. The 5th season was a last minute tack-on since they weren't sure it would happen, Straczynski compressed years 4 and 5 of his story into what turned out to be season 4. What ended up as Season 5 was a pale comparison to what came before it.

@pinkmonkeybird26445 жыл бұрын
No one I know who loves the show thinks Season 5 was well done. They had so much they could have covered better - the telepath war (not just Byron), Garabaldi getting Bester out of his head, rebuilding Earth after the devastation of Clark, the fate of Centauri Prime, Vir becoming emperor, the return of the technomages, the fate of G’Kar. Instead, they introduced a horrible new leader of B5 who was inexplicably Sheridan’s ex-wife) while Sheridan was basically president of an office on the station. They also destroyed several characters who didn’t deserve their fate, particularly Lyta and Lennier. Lyta risked everything so many times for Earth, and they threw her away suddenly like trash. And then the writers had to demonize Lennier for secretly loving Delenn. It was so out of character for both, and they were rapidly written out of the show before any sort of redemption. I really hated that bit of plot. Maybe it would have been better to stop at Season 4 and let Season 5 have been Crusade.

Original Plan was 5 seasons. Original Network did indeed announce they'd wouldn't pick up a 5th season resulting in moving dealing with Clark to 4th season; (Shadow War was going to end in season 4 anyway). In addition this is responsible for three of the movies. Yes, TNT then renewing it for the 5th season meant that every episode they had originally planned as a breather episode for season 4 ended up in season 5. There's still some good episodes in season 5 such as the fall of Centauri Prime. Crusade's main problem is it aired completely out of order and consequently that it didn't even get to finish the first planned season.

I’m conflicted. In one sense, I’m glad to see Babylon 5 have a new video produced buy a decently sized channel. On the other hand, as others have stated it’s very obvious that the writers, director, and host of this video have never seen Babylon 5. It’s dripping with mispronunciations, fake enthusiasm, and reads like a Wikipedia overview. It’s mostly accurate but there are a few glaring inaccuracies. This channel’s DS9 video has the same issues. It’s a testament to how good B5 is that even though this video wasn’t really that great, the clips from the show that were shown made me excited enough to do a rewatch now that it’s on Amazon Prime.
