In this final episode on the Old Babylonian Period, we take a look at what happened after Hammurabi's reign came to an end. The Old Kingdom of the First Dynasty of Babylon continued to hold power for several decades afterward, though it gradually lost territory and was eventually overthrown by an unexpected foe. Don't miss the final chapter on how the Old Babylonian Kingdom of Hammurabi came to an end.

Thank you again for initiating my interest for ancient history 3 years ago... You have allowed me to gather some more widespread knowledge, by distancing myself from a traditional Eurocentric approach to history, to wich my education exposed me. I often watch again some of your content and find myself a little more knowledgeble today... The discovery of the Hittites, Assyrology, Ancient Egypt, the Levant peoples etc is the result of viewing a few channels, along yours of course, since then. Always nice to watch you again... Keep up with the Egyptian dynastic king (pharaohs) lists 👍

It has been fascinating to follow the story of Babylon through the several episodes. Like later kingdoms and nations, the ancient city states affected each other in a complex fashion with multiple alliances and breakups. As I had earlier followed the Hittite stories I was waiting for them to come along and upset the applecart.

I learned about Shirruken(Sargon), Hammurabi, Ashurnasirpal, & Nebuchadnezzar II in 6th grade. Learning about these for guys helped sparked my interest in ancient history at a young age. As well as documentaries on Greece, Egypt and Rome when the History channel was still the History channel my dad would put on instead of me watching cartoons when I was like 4 so it was normal for me. What sparked your interest Cy?

HI! For me it also started when I was really young. My name is actually Cyrus (Cy is my nickname, what fam and friends call me) and so one day I wanted to learn more about the origin of my name and any stories behind it which as you may have guessed, led me to king Cyrus the Great of Persia. The more I learned about him, the more I also began hearing of all of the places within the Persian Empire: Babylon, Lydia, the cities of the Ionian coast, etc and so I wanted to learn more about all of these places. That's what started my interest and it hasn't waned since!

Hi, thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it. As far as we know, they were one of the stateless tribes that lived in Babylonia at the time. There's not much known about them other than they were probably nomadic and caused trouble for the authorities from time to time.

Outstanding as always didnt know for sealand dynasty, it is interesting the south or ancient Sumer always raised against its conquerors, Akkadians later Babylonians, it seems even in that time that Southern Iraq was still mostly populated by Sumerian populations who were different to Babylonians, Akkadians and Amorites.
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah as the power or authority of the king in Babylon declined, you had these new dynasties appearing and declaring their independence in various provinces; the farther away, the more likely they'd break away. Yeah remnants of the Sumerian population were still there, but Akkadian had more or less become the main language. This is probably because along with the original Akkadian speakers, there was a lot of Amorite immigration/migration into the region. Since Akkadian and Amorite are quite similar, it was easier for Amorites to adopt it. Akkadian and Amorite are both from the Semitic family of languages, whereas Sumerian is completely different and probably would have been harder for newcomers to learn. That's my take on it. Thanks again, stay safe!

@@HistorywithCy Robert Howard was educated in the history of Greece and Egypt. The backstory of the saga is that his Hyborian Age (about 12,000 BC) is itself the backstory of the various people of Eurasia. Basically taking all the mythological ideas of ancient people (from the river Stix to the Nemedians of Irish mythology) and creating a world predicated on the idea that these were all real memories from a pre-cataclysm era. Even the gods are real and he goes off the assumption that the Titans and Giants of many "overthrow" theologies were the original gods of ancient peoples and the Aesir and Olympians were real people who became deified after death. So the Aesir and Vanir were real tribes who worshiped Ymir and the Frost Giants. Raucous fun but not much to do with real history. Actually, I've met people who believe that Howard was a channeler or astral voyager or something and that the Hyborian Age is real history and tie it in with legends of Atlantis. Now those were some fun conversations!

So Hammurabi reign for 42 years, Samsu-iluna for 37y and Abi-eshuh for another 27y... are we sure this is true? I mean they reign more time than the average lifespan of most of their subjects, literally the majority of people died around their 30 something 40 if you were lucky and these dudes reign more than that which means they live almost twice the time than the average person of the time.
