Thanks for doing this. I think I will leave comments as I watch just to answer your questions as we go along. Sakura Gakuin was a JPop Idol group set up by the Amuse Talent Agency to coach and train about a dozen of the most talented girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment (eg singing, dancing, acting, modelling, writing, stage management etc). When the girls reach school leaving age (15 in Japan) they graduate out of SG to start their career in entertainment with Amuse representing them - or some might go to do other things of course. When the 15 year olds graduated Amuse would bring in new younger girls to replace them - again just like new girls transfer into schools as the older girls graduate. They gave Sakura Gakuin a school theme - it was for girls aged 10 to 15. All the girls would perform group songs together at Sakura Gakuin shows, but with the school theme they also created sub-units or clubs like after school clubs you would get in normal schools where some children would stay on after school to play tennis, chess, learn to cook etc. The SG clubs would have about 3 of the girls in each one and they would get their own themed song and dance routines to perform between the main group songs at the SG shows ... so the cooking club would have songs about food, tennis club songs about tennis, science club songs about science etc. BABYMETAL was the Heavy Music club and they got their first heavy metal related songs.

I am a 58 year old Babymetal fan from Germany. I grew up with Pink Floyd, Gun's n Roses (I saw them live in the Munich Olympic Stadium), SAGA... But BM created an emotional connection with me. And the background created with SG supports that. I attended two live performances in Munich last year. Once as the opening act for Sabaton and the second time on their world tour. An incredible energy floods through the arena. Have a good time Kitsunes 🦊 キツネ神様のために🤘🎌

Cute girls good. Metal good. Have you seen the Fuwamoco cover of Gimme Choko? The vocals didn't turn out great but the animation is super cute. I heard the music was done by Yuyoyuppe.

BABYMETAL are unlike boy bands and girl bands you are familiar with where the idea came first, there was a set formula, an audience already identified, a certain style of music written to an already successful formula almost guaranteed to sell loads of records, a set number of places to be filled by boys/girls with the right look - they just needed to identify the individuals to fill the places. With BABYMETAL the talent came first, the idea was formed around the girls. There was no pre-determined audience for BABYMETAL, it was an idea inspired by the vocal talents and stage presence of Su-metal, the brain child of just one man, their lifelong metalhead producer Kei Kobayashi. After seeing Su performing with her previous group Karen Girl's he was so impressed with her unusually loud (for a JPop singer) singing style that he thought she could front a metal band and not be drowned out by the instrumentals. His idea was to have her front a band playing metal music but singing JPop hooks and melodies - something that had not been done before, it was untried and untested, but he hoped it might just breath some fresh air into the stagnant and declining metal scene in Japan and may even bring a new and younger audience to rock and metal. He also thought he would add the element of choreographed dance - again something unheard of in metal. So he added Su's young friends Yui and Moa to bring that element to the group. This was what the lore was about in the first place - the fight to revive metal, to battle against the JPop and Idol culture that was dominating Japanese music ... so this was them leading the Metal Resistance. The other clubs or sub-units were already being put in place by Amuse when they formed Sakura Gakuin. They thought Koba's idea for a Heavy Music club was madness - metal was on a very steep decline in Japan in 2010 so Amuse were not going to invest in an experiment that was guaranteed to fail. They only allowed him to form the Heavy Music club because it would give the girls some good experience, but they provided no extra funding so there was no financial risk when it would fail ... and as far as Amuse was concerned it would only last 2 or 3 years until Su was 15 and would graduate anyway.

It took me a few years to understand and formulate this in the way as you mentioned it, Babymetal was formed around talent, not concept-first. It's an idea worth spreading, an important distinction. In part the reason it took me so long is just because I didn't understand the music industry. Some in the entertainment industry in Japan have said: Babymetal is at a quality level unlike almost all other idol groups, if you can call Babymetal an idol group at all. And I think this is totally by design. Babymetal has an idols origin, but are not really idols (anymore). I think the quality level of Perfume (big sisters of Babymetal in some sense) was part of why Kobametal thought this idea could work, at least that's 1 interpretation I can use based on an old interview. So that sort of confirms my idea, right ? 🙂
@Grington300

@@autohmae Sounds about right. They did have their idol origin, but the lore during Legend 1997 suggested they had been working undercover having infiltrated the idol culture to fight against it from within - but they were now breaking out to continue as BABYMETAL leading the metal resistance ... so idols since then? I'd say not, they haven't done any of the things like meet & greets etc that are, as far as I know, associated with idols (not that I really know anything about idols).

Sakura Gakuin were just a music/entertainment group of 12 10-15 yr old girls - the theme of the band being "school" - hence theeschool uniforms ( a bit like bandmaids "theme" being maids I guess). They were all filmed constantly (I don't know if for tv or just one of their many DVDs - but great for getting used to being in the public eye, stagefright etc) and the school theme was extended to them having "classes", exams, tests, and many other typical school activities - including music "clubs" . The heavy metal club (there were several others mentioned in the video) became "Babymetal" and was made independent of Sakura Gakuin I think when Suzuka left, or "graduatred" . Besides all the music clubs (many girls participated in more than one music "club" - both Moa & Yui did) they also did comedic plays, MV's, sketches, shows/performances. - all sorts of stuff 😂. I guess it's a bit like a school band getting super famous and going independent of the school - except in this case the school was a group itself(Sakura Gakuin). There are Sakura Gakuin videos of Babymetal on stage - their earliest perfromances were under the "Sakura Gakuin" umbrella group. Sakura Gakuin is a whole different thing - very fun to watch, with some surprisingly good content/music/comedy/practical jokes/whatever and imo was a brilliant start for any young girl wanting to get into the entertainment industry. I hope that helps a little - and if not I'll console myself with the fact that if you got this far at least I wasted a few minutes of someones life :P (Yeah.....I'm English - so sue me 🙂) have fun!

You don't have to worry about the lore. It is mostly to do with the theatrical aspects of their concerts - especially the various 'Legend' concerts in Japan. Some of those are like a rock opera. They don't just go on stage and play their songs like every other band, they put on a show. However they largely use it to maintain some mystery and their privacy ... they only exist when they are on stage as Su-metal, Moametal and Momometal. When they are not on stage they don't exist. As you saw, they started very young, doing all the lore and so on was a very good way to protect them from the public gaze etc so they can live relatively normal lives anonymously. Basically all the lore, the Fox God etc is just a bit of fun - ignore it by all means if you want to, nobody will mind.

Sakura Gakuin is an idol group. Their theme is junior high school life for girls. Back Street Boys, for instance, were"tough" kids from the streets. In their school, they have cheerleaders which are the Twinkle Stars Baton Club. They have Home Economics which is the Mini Patti cooking club, etc. One of the clubs at the school is the heavy music club and the band in that club is called Babymetal. Just like in school you might join certain clubs. Every year the clubs would produce a song and it would be part of an album released as Sakura Gakuin. They filmed the school as to establish characters and give a background. The band Babymetal from the heavy music club took off and conquered the world.

I still think it's very important to point out Sakura Gakuin was school-themed in part because of their age and a way to graduate-out and add new members every year, in large part because they took their most talented girls at the time and give them a way to get more experience: singing, dancing, acting, doing interviews, from both the host and interviewee perspective and doing photo shoots and learning to better ad lib and hosting a show. And maybe they would even uncover new talents the girls had they didn't even know they had, just by letting them do things. The group itself was never meant to be a cash-grab or even popular. But popular enough it wouldn't cost them any money.
@KenjaTimu
@KenjaTimu 9 ай бұрын
@REn-ACTIONS well it's not a real school and they're not real clubs. Sakura Gakuin was an Idol Group created by the Amuse talent agency. The school stuff is just flavor. They laughed about it. They never pretended it was real. Ok strike that. They often pretended it was real. But also sometimes they didn't.

Thanks for doing the guide. Yes, we like to re-watch it again from beginning to end. 😁 I get that you don't get it. It happened to me at first. And, honestly, knowing all the lore is not necessary to enjoy their music. The "Avengers" system was relevant since going back to the triangle formation after Yui left was the "correct" solution. It lasted almost four years and it was specially important because one of those "Avengers" (Momoko) finally became an official member. Other than that, the Fox Sign thingy is also important because they (and we) do it all the time. 🤣 In my opinion, they use all the lore to preserve their privacy since they perform playing a character (not as themselves), so they built all of this since the beginning.

When Su reached 15 it was time for her to graduate from SG. Rather than send her off as a solo artist, because BABYMETAL had started to gain some popularity Amuse decided that BABYMETAL should separate from SG with her to become an independent band in their own right. J Pop = pop music from Japan (it predates KPop by many years). KPop = pop music from Korea Mikio Fujioka (RIP) fell from an observation platform where he was star gazing at the turn of the new year. He died from his injuries 5 days later. He was a very keen amateur astronomer.

The whole story around them is just extra material for those who like that kind of thing. It's more common in Japan for people to become (very) dedicated fans of artists. I don't pretend to know why, but I can relate to it because I find their artists more interesting and inspiring. I had never gone to a concert myself until I discovered Babymetal and just a year later I had already seen them twice. I had to travel 340 miles to our capital to see them and I had never even been there before. I reckon most people just listen to their music and perhaps enjoy their shows. 🙂

Babymetal is a show, its theatre for them, look at Babymetal more like a Metal Opera not a concert. That's why there are stories and lore. Lore has taken a backseat in resent times. Upon Momometal joining Babymetal the group is better than ever.

⚡ 💀 💕 Su is no longer the tallest member of BABYMETAL. : ) The newest member Momoko (MOMOMETAL) is a little taller. They released a fourth studio album, 'THE OTHER ONE' in 2023. And of course, Momoko became a BABYMETAL member later that year. Unlike what's stated in the guide, all three BABYMETAL members were signed to Amuse, Inc. in 2007, including Yui. Yui's Japanese wikipedia page is much more complete than the English version. By the time she joined Sakura Gakuin in 2010, she had already done commercials, did modeling, and appeared in the Prius World show as an Amuse artist. The neck brace (or neck corset) is a tribute to Yoshiki, the drummer/pianist/songwriter from the hugely influential Japanese Metal/Visual Kei group X-Japan. He injured his neck from too much extreme headbanging, and had to wear a brace to try and prevent further damage. There are a lot of references to X-Japan in BABYMETAL lyrics, music and stage performances. Apparently you're not very familiar with Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Ghost, Sleep Token, Slipknot, Pink Floyd or any of the other groups that have a lot of associated lore. Either that, or you just ignore that aspect of those groups. And that's fine. : ) I haven't seen anyone asking you to immerse yourself in BABYMETAL lore. The long comments I've seen on your videos are more about factual details.

Let's say their lore is more like a theatre you know, it really isn't necessary for BABYMETAL’s existence, it's more of a visual aspect & literature, as ONE OK ROCK for example wich by coincidence also had a contract with Amuse, their music videos tell a story like a normal fictional story like any other artistic music video out there, so there is some kind of lore with their band it's just not as in a big theatrical scale as BABYMETAL, because BABYMETAL also sells merch like graphic novels about their lore, T-shirts, accessories etc so their lore is used to create art & inspiration for all kinds of merch & the story in their music videos about the lore, for example if you react to their song Distortion it tells part of the story about the lore. You don't really to know about the lore to enjoy BABYMETAL as it's not something deep 😂 really believe me, I know it sounded very complex & crazy to you but it's actually very simple if you follow the books etc, it's just part of the thematic of the band & their live stages, as you said they have a big production like lasers, big projectors, statues of foxes, so when you go to a BABYMETAL show you're just watching a band "normally" with some theatrical aspect you don't really need to focus on that.

It's not really a relevant focus to enjoy their music. Its not necessary. I doubt that anyone actually even thinks about it. probably most of it is just fill out press releases. It makes these videos longer but other than that nobody really pays much attention to it. I think a lot of it started as a way for koba and the girls to have fun. Here is how it all got started imo. I watched a documentary about their first show in singapore. The girls are like 12 and 13, it the largest crowd by far with 2500 people. Most of them are from singapore. Right before they go on stage you can see the girls are petrified they never expected to be here in front of all these people. They usually played for a couple hundred people in Japan nd mostly as part of Sakura Gakuin and 8 or 9 other girls to help them. but now they are about to go out on stage at that young age and they are petrified. They go out on stage and they kill it. Once the show starts they forget everything except what they have practiced for so many hours and musclememory takes over. The audience loves it and the girls get more and more confident. They dont know what happened to them so they just call it the fox god descending on them. I dont think they believe it but its as good an explanation as they are likely to need so it enters rhe lore. The hand gesture was just a mistake . They didnt understand the heavy metal sign and thought it was a shadow fox. It became kore. Just as shit happened that they thought was interesting it became lore for them to make sense of every thing and to amuse themselves on the planes and busses. Thats where it all comes from. Its kind of interesting as trivia but its probably more for the girls to amuse themselves away from home than anything else. They were kids and they had imaginations and played games. Thats where the lore comes from

Oh - jpop is a bit like kpop but it's really only for internal consumption - kpop to me feels like it's almost designed as an export music - and imo the kpop industry is pretty...unhealthy (I'm being super polite here) - jpop doesn't seem to be anywhere near as bad on that front (yeah - that sort of thing matters to me - heard too many horror stories from the kpop industry). Otherwise it's pretty much both sing and dance - or mime or whatever and seem to specialise a lot on MVs - but that's only an impression I have. "J" metal would be Japanese metal I guess - and there's plenty of it now with some good stuff in the past (e.g. XJapan) - and some very good female bands. Korean metal...I dunno...maybe 😂
