BAC Mono onboard hot lap at F1 Track Zandvoort new layout

Had a great day with driving-fun at F1 track Zandvoort, I was very eager to test the new layout where Max Verstappen is going to win his first real home GP in 2021!
Here I take you with me onboard my BAC Mono for a hot lap on the new F1 track zandvoort.
It didn't disappoint. As it was my first go on this track ánd my first go on any track with the Mono I wasn't pushing at all and left a lot on the table, the banked corner before the main straight is probably flat out, but I was a bit scared and chickened out every lap :)
It took some time to get used to the new car, damper setup, brake balance and how to steer with a rock solid car like this. It is so different from the Atom and KTM, front axle has never ending grip and the ceramic brakes dont even seem to get warm the slightest, what a great car on track.
With all my previous cars I got around 2 minutes at best, so thats a big difference

Thanks! And in the end it turned out to be a world record for street cars👌🏻 It was 4 sec faster than the Porsche GT2RS 😳 And I wasnt even pushing on my first track outing

Wow. What an amazing circuit and what a lovely, unstressed, flowing lap. Quick, too. I was at the BAC factory before lockdown. It’s definitely top of my list and I hope to get to try one later in the year. A big step on from the Lotuses and many Caterhams I’ve enjoyed in the past. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve owned several Atoms, An Xbow and other lightweight cars, but Mono is such a true new experience. Every petrolhead should at least try one once

@@unwindout I was thinking more specifically about the Hamilton Verstappen rivalry and where 'normal' racing rules aren't always adhered to. It looks a fabulous track. I just watched the documentary on the making of the track and loved where the designer emphasised the need to balance danger and "objective safety".

Hey Roy! this is car 105. What app are you using to get the track map and telemetry? Also I listened to your suspension settings. You have the rears set to full hard?

The rear stays dead stock on the street and on track, exactly like the manual. Never adjust that. The telemetry is just from gopro itself, with the black 8 and up it only works in the qopro quik app, 7 and lower it also works in the desktop version. They call it stickers. The gps data is in the camera itself when you have a 5black or up if you have it engaged

Nice. Do you know what the drive-by noise level is for the 2.5 Mono at full throttle?

I asked the marshals and had 93.9db. The limit was 92, but because it was a quit day they let me go due to not too much noise stacking. It doesnt really say everything for other tracks because they all measure different things. Mine is a cat less exhaust and the read silencer has 2000 miles on it. If I would repack it, it would save me a little noise. Hope this helps

No not really, for me it is a road car first and for all, I have used it on track for 2 hours…so I want to drive up there to the track in the Mono and back, no place for extra set of tyres.

From what I've seen the Mono steering wheel seems like it would be a bit uncomfortable. What's it like to hold for awhile at a time?

Not sure why you think this, but it is the best wheel on itself compared to Atoms and X-Bows, because it is made to measure, it is exactly the size of my hands. Apart from that this is the only car where you can adjust depth and hight of the steering wheel location. So all in all it is perfect sized and perfect located.

@@RoyzGarage Hm, I did not know that. It just seemed that due to the way that the wheel is curved, your hands wouldn't be parallel with each other, possibly leading to a strain on the wrists after awhile

One of the reasons given for Piers Courage fatal crash at Zandvoort was sand getting blown on the track. I wonder if they have fixed that problem. Pretty cool layout al, the same.

His suspension/steering failed which made him crash heavily. The magnesium in the chassis made the burns much more severe....

@@hound83 He was dead before the fire. The reason magnesium was used, was to strengthen the chassis and suspension, but I don’t know for certain what caused the accident, however it was reported than sand on the track was responsible for accidents before and after.

Like all Mono’s this one is N/A. It’s a 305hp mountune racing engine, 2.5 liters, mounted in length (instead of width) and has a 6 speed Hewland (F3) sequential gearbox. The turbo model comes approx 2022 That one has the Ford RS Cosworth 2.3 liter turbo engine with 335 hp

Well, they are very different. Ariel is driving fun and on the side turned out to be very fast as well. BAC is pure adrenaline dedication, which you can also use on the road. For me personally I chose a new Atom 4 sequential 350 (soon to be featured on my channel) above thr Mono, mostly because Mono us expensive with everything, I was afraid to really use it properly. I did 1 hour of track driving and called it a day and was happy nothing broke down. My Atom is booked in for trackdays all season, much cheaper to repair, maintain and run. So depending on budget one has to choose. Unlimited funds I’d never sold the Mono…normal working class Atom is best thing there is and achievable

They vibrate too much at certain speeds, so thats annoying at times. But they have an update now (like on Mono R) and that problem is solved. I dont upgrade now because I dont really mind them. On track they are fine and off track I can live with them, just shift back when I need to see😁

I'm curious, and I'm sure somebody out there, has driven both in the same car, and knows the ballpark time difference. I'm not trying to take anything away from the Mono... It's a very fast car.. I'll be getting an Atom 4, but I'd still like to have a Mono as well. What a great track to drive! Several banked corners. Thank you for sharing it with us! Great driving too! Perhaps another 2-5 sec gained after a better setup and courage/comfort? It's scary when you're pushing around a corner, faster than the past, and you're feeling no understeer or oversteer.. Feels like you're breaking some laws of physics..

I wait in the banked corner until I see the exit, the whole idea is to go full throttle the complete corner, but when you do it wrong you’ll meet the wall...I can only loose and had a great time👌🏻. There certainly is 5 sec to gain on this street setting, another 3-5 on slicks with more neg camber and stiffer suspension setting. The Xbow and Atom where at the unbanked track indeed, but I didn’t use the banking so difference will be not too much, sector times are way, way faster. The Atom is great fun, this is very serious, both is great to have and I’m not sure which I like the most on track. Times are not important to me as a funfactor, the experience is and that is great in both the cars, lesser so in the X-bow

Now you have me thinking about canceling the Atom 4, and stretching for the Mono.. Now I'm conflicted.. But I can take passengers on the Atom.. And when I let them drive, I can join them.. As well, I can easily increase it's horsepower, unlike the Mono (the bodywork is so tight).. But the Mono is the closest you can get, for a race car that's street legal..

Funny that people think this is a new layout... It's for years and years still the same.

It has been renewed and the 2 biggest corners have been banked, so there is a big change in layout, all though direction is the same, technically it is very different, the banked corner before the “long” straight secures that the F1 cars can go full throttle at the start of the long corner, the banked corner at the end of the straight is makes sure they can brake much later. Small differences, but indeed new layout

@@RoyzGarage There was no change in the turn after the straight. The Tarzanbocht (turn 1) is unchanged layout-wise. Turn 4 and 15 where changed with banking. Turn 4 is the 180 degrees left hander.

I think you are right, that has changed (4), not turn 1, but they changed the sandbank into overrun track in turn 1, so there is far less risk in the braking zone, for instance that made me brake much later, I needed that overrun 2 times, but it learned me my latest breaking point, I would never have pushed that much when risking going into the sand….so layout wise it is the same, but surely F1 will use this advantage/less risk just like me
