That's the sound of the air-driven engine starter motor. Love it!
@GeorgeMCMLIX3 ай бұрын
As an aircraft engineer in the UK I worked on several BAC 1-11s during my early career. I can say, with hand on heart that the engine starter motor on the 1-11 was one of the most complex units ever! Called the Constant Speed Drive Starter (CSDS) it was a large, heavy unit attached to the engine gearbox. Not only did it provide drive to start the engine but also regulated the speed of the electrical generator. A marvel of design and engineering, and unique in sound 👍🏻
@mytmousemalibu14 күн бұрын
I don't think the 1-11's had air starters, I believe they are hydraulic which is why they sound the way they do. Air starters don't sound like that, they aren't that loud and usually a loud woosh of air at initial start. Most everything is air start except for the smaller biz jets. Those are usually electric. I know for sure that some industrial Speys are hydraulic start.

So did I. USAIR had a Saturday flight sale for over two years from Toledo through Pittsburgh to any destination. $49 round trip if you left on a Saturday and came back on Tuesday and you got free miles. Flew to a lot of places, just because I could. Most flights were on these wonderful British jets.

Yes it was a great plane after they solved the super stall issue that killed key company personnel on a test flight. It pancaked on the ground with almost no forward speed. It's a high flying tail masking issue that I think was solved by putting stall strips on the wings but I might be wrong on that.
@1bobhodgson2 жыл бұрын
The prototype elevators only had manual servo tabs, changed to hydraulically powered elevators after the deep-stall accident. Also the inner portion of the wing had its aerofoil changed to give inverse camber to promote root stall and pitch-down. You can see the change in the root leading edge in the clip. All the new info passed freely to Douglas and others to prevent further accidents.

Have you encountered a 1-11 taking off up close?? I have and I don't know your definition of "good". The noise of the non-hushkit BAC 1-11 taking off is extremely deafening. You have to cover your ears to avoid your eardrums getting damaged.
