One of few things us Brits 🇬🇧 got right was designing this aircraft. God I miss flying these. They were real cockpits and real responses to real input. Fantastic safety record. I don’t think there’s any left flying at all in the UK now, but I have fond memories for sure.

Tell me about it. These things used to come screaming over my house in Lagos, Nigeria back in the 80’s as they climbed out of Murtala Mohammed Airport in Ikeja, and made a Bee line for Enugu. They were SO LOUD, you were convinced it was probably diving into your house - especially if you were fast asleep and were woken up by that screaming banshee!. You could still hear the ear splitting thunder from it’s engines long after it had disappeared above the clouds and was no longer visible. Indeed, you could hear it taking off from the airport which was 12 miles away! What perplexes me is how relatively quiet it is from that position on board the BAC-1-11, right by those engines! 😳

In 1971, as a 21-year-old, I went on a plane with 2 jet engines for the first time, that was from Schiphol (A'dam) to London ... with a BAC111, I will never forget that plane, but especially those 2 engines. They've become a bit too quiet for me in recent years. These BAC111 engines look a bit like my Zanussi washing machine when it spins at 1400 rpm.😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/pF6mf6WqhtWLjdU

Flew on many BAC 1-11's with Allegheny Airlines out of Detroit in the 70's. It was basically a "Pocket-Rocket" type of aircraft. The wing design and lack of leading edge devices meant the aircraft loved the runway. Sometimes on hot days....you had to plead with the thing to get it off the runway.
@Dino046910 жыл бұрын
Great sound! Brings back memories of flying on the early DC9's years ago when I usually would try to get seated on the row just in front of the engines as shown here...used to love it when the engines would go out of phase and you'd hear the oscillating beating sound they made until they slowly sync'd back up again...but this is the best sound on startup of any rear engine aircraft I have ever heard from inside! The only other airliner with such a unique sound on startup I guess would be the L1011 Tristar with the Rolls RB211's and much different in sound than this but both being very unique. Seems like I remember the old DC8's engines having a howling sound on startup when I used to see them at the old ATL terminal back in the 60's and 70's but I never experienced what one sounded like from inside since the only DC8 I had the chance to fly on was a Delta and it had the newer CFM56 engines at the time instead of the old turbo jets..I never had the chance to fly on the BAC1-11 nor the Tridents being that I'm in the USA but I was always fascinated by these and other euro jets of that era! thanks for posting...
