One of few things us Brits 🇬🇧 got right was designing this aircraft. God I miss flying these. They were real cockpits and real responses to real input. Fantastic safety record. I don’t think there’s any left flying at all in the UK now, but I have fond memories for sure.

I agree. I don't know if it's some sort of inbuilt British bias but I just love the look and sound of the 1-11. Shame I was born too late to ever fly onboard. The closest I've ever been to one is the static display at Brooklands. Lovely aircraft all round.

Beautiful video and sounds! The BAC-111 holds a special place in my heart, as it was the very first airplane I flew on in my life, in 1970. LANICA AN-BBI, then many times on TACA YS-17-C and YS-18-C

Tell me about it. These things used to come screaming over my house in Lagos, Nigeria back in the 80’s as they climbed out of Murtala Mohammed Airport in Ikeja, and made a Bee line for Enugu. They were SO LOUD, you were convinced it was probably diving into your house - especially if you were fast asleep and were woken up by that screaming banshee!. You could still hear the ear splitting thunder from it’s engines long after it had disappeared above the clouds and was no longer visible. Indeed, you could hear it taking off from the airport which was 12 miles away! What perplexes me is how relatively quiet it is from that position on board the BAC-1-11, right by those engines! 😳

In 1971, as a 21-year-old, I went on a plane with 2 jet engines for the first time, that was from Schiphol (A'dam) to London ... with a BAC111, I will never forget that plane, but especially those 2 engines. They've become a bit too quiet for me in recent years. These BAC111 engines look a bit like my Zanussi washing machine when it spins at 1400 rpm.😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/pF6mf6WqhtWLjdU

You could hear them just about anywhere at an airport despite all the noise around them. The USAir BAC-111s with hydraulic starters were Mohawk airplanes. Air start versions were Braniff. Hydraulic starters are way more entertaining. Cannot thank you enough for this experience.

Flew on many BAC 1-11's with Allegheny Airlines out of Detroit in the 70's. It was basically a "Pocket-Rocket" type of aircraft. The wing design and lack of leading edge devices meant the aircraft loved the runway. Sometimes on hot days....you had to plead with the thing to get it off the runway.

Great sound! Brings back memories of flying on the early DC9's years ago when I usually would try to get seated on the row just in front of the engines as shown here...used to love it when the engines would go out of phase and you'd hear the oscillating beating sound they made until they slowly sync'd back up again...but this is the best sound on startup of any rear engine aircraft I have ever heard from inside! The only other airliner with such a unique sound on startup I guess would be the L1011 Tristar with the Rolls RB211's and much different in sound than this but both being very unique. Seems like I remember the old DC8's engines having a howling sound on startup when I used to see them at the old ATL terminal back in the 60's and 70's but I never experienced what one sounded like from inside since the only DC8 I had the chance to fly on was a Delta and it had the newer CFM56 engines at the time instead of the old turbo jets..I never had the chance to fly on the BAC1-11 nor the Tridents being that I'm in the USA but I was always fascinated by these and other euro jets of that era! thanks for posting...

One not too long ago from 2004-2018, but in the 1970's and 1980's I was a frequent visitor. In the old days, the airline relied on Bac 1-11's as the workhorse. Now it's been 737's older to newer generations for pretty much the last decades after the 727 era. There's also some Twin Otters and Saabs right now for the Sister Islands, love the Twin Otter especially!

Fantastic sound reminds me when I used to stand under the engines on the de tuners at LHR after engine changes (BA in the 70/80's) the sound of the CSDS winding up the engine, then the over speed whistle/wine as it disengaged still makes my hairs stand on end. All that without proper ear muffs! ....... Pardon what was that? Nothing more exciting to be standing under a RR Spey (Trident & 1-11) at full take off power. Just wish I had had a video then .....Thanks for posting Jez

I flew on many 1-11's in the 60's ,70's and 80's the last one bieng in 1988, catania to LGW ,over those years i flew in 200 series, 400 and 500 series, Gatwick ,Manchester, Venice Palma, as they where very plentiful then, i have been flying since 1959, so my journeys comprised on vanguards, viscounts, Britannias, etc and nowadays, 787's, 777's probably most types but, never the caravelle and VC 10 for i was meant to fly on a VC 10 but at the last moment was switched to a 707, like wise i was switched from a caravelle to a Britannia, thst is how i missed out on those two types, i still regret that, but as i was told at the time ,Britannias may be on their way out soon and indeed they where, i have actually lost count of the many times i have flown on the 1-11 it was standard then and now they are museum pieces, as well as Duxford there is also a 1-11 preserved at Brookwood, thankyou for a really great video!!

The hushkits fitted to the engine exhausts slightly reduce the thrust. With the awful power to weight ratio of the BAC 1-11 in the first place, this makes the takeoff roll pretty long for a plane of this size.
