I've just realised why Bach didn't write much orchestral music. In his day nobody could play it!! This is not easy but this ensemble just nail it. Wonderful musicianship, wonderful music. Surely, there has never been a better performance of this concerto ever. It wont be surpassed, I wish Bach could have heard it, something very special took place here.

@@trobinsson79 I think you will find that in comparison to today's high standards of teaching and performance the abilities of most musicians at the time of Bach were poor. His music is, as of course you know, very difficult.

Indeed, it was not great. This one is (on further investigation and conversations) a Schilke custom instrument which was never in production, but which Yamaha used as the basis for the YTR-9910. It is build as a shortened C version of the P6 long bell Schilke Bb/A piccolo, to be pitched in C. The big differences are a slightly shorter bell (which can on the 9910 be extended to play in A and Bb with separate bell extenders), and a straight, shorter leadpipe (the P6 has a curved leadpipe). The Bach long bell piccolos from the last period of Vincent's life were simply not great instruments. I know a few who swear by, but a far greater majority who swear at, them. The 196 they made as a shortened Selmer 59 copy was little better (but did have Bach valves), and the more modern 196 is a great horn, albeit a Stomvi in Bach labeling. Probably too much discussion for here, but it is cool to talk shop. Even cooler to hear this great performance.

This recording has been dubbed over. I have no doubt that they were actually playing, but the audio we hear does not match the video. Look at 3:02 - Reinhold Friedrich (the trumpeter) apparently manages to play a D in the stave using open fingerings (and then the note doesn't change a beat later when he puts his first valve down). For anyone who doesn't know how trumpets work, that isn't possible. In the actual performance he probably played it as an appoggiatura by slurring up from the C, as some players do, but that isn't what we hear in the audio.

I think 13:25 is an encore of the third movement. Michala Petri uses a sopranino recorder. And the trumpet goes up from the fifth to the tonic, for the final note. Other than that, sounds like the same music.

I so admire these musicians. I always think how since childhood they have each of them spent hundreds, thousands of hours practising hard. And making sacrifices. While their school chums were out playing, they were indoors doing their scales and arpeggios and broken chords. Plus they had to have self-belief that if they persevered one day they would make it as professional musicians. God bless them!
