I managed to play most of the tune out of this arrangement, but was shocked by the confusion, earlier caused by what seemed like an excess of tied notes making a visual barrier to finding the real melody! Nicely played and very helpful!

When Bach composes, it's a galaxy. This is an extremely difficult piece to play in such a way that the voices flow totally independent of each other, yet are musically cohesive. Only Horowitz controls the inner voices in the most intimate way.

I do not know for sure if Busoni understanded Bach in its totality, but it is clear to me that Busoni felt a lot through Bach
@prs_813 жыл бұрын
Has there ever been anyone who understood Bach in all its totality?
@SamTahbou3 жыл бұрын
Unless you personally meet and discuss the music with Bach, you cannot be sure you understand it. And even then he was rumoured to be enigmatic about his thoughts and emotions, and enjoyed riddles. So every transcription of his work by a later composer, be it Busoni, Brahms or anyone, was partly an interpretation too. And that's fine. Busoni did transcribe quite a few of Bach's works, and we can just be grateful, and it does not stop others from doing the same and creating new interpretations. Heck, even playing Bach on a piano is already an interpretation, we are adding dynamics at the very least.
@Frei_Raum3 жыл бұрын
I guess there are so much different ways to understand Bach or other any composer as people are living. But you may be right with the assumption, that Busoni felt a lot through Bach. At least I feel a lot when Paul plays Bach/Busoni.

I really really love this piece and I'm so glad I've found your video with the score and the view of your hands. I was a bit thrown off by the score as a lot of what's written just is not playable (unless you have obscenely big hands). Is it a case of accepting that it's not physically possible to play what's written and making compromises to get as close as possible? I suppose having the middle pedal on a grand makes it possible to keep some of the bass notes sustained where they are tied, but without I can see that there are some instances where it's necessary to kill the bass voice prematurely. I noticed also that around 0:45 for example you hit the D above middle C with the Bb. The D isn't written in the score, is that something you do to keep the sonority of the soprano D which pedalling makes it impossible to sustain as a kind of compromise?

I dont get it. How is your left hand legato?
@florianwalch56392 жыл бұрын
You simplify the ritenutamente in the restatement of the Cantus' beginning (by playing the tenor with pedal, not finger legato) even though you have the span for it. In my options, Busoni wants this to sound strained - I prefer it that way.

Perdón pero al existir la versión de Horowitz, es impío escuchar esto. Muy mezcaldo todo, hay un eco muy insoportable. Bach es claridad, es música sagrada, prístina, diafana, bien expuesta por Horowitz.
