Bach - Canonische Veränderungen: Vom Himmel hoch BWV 769a - Winsemius | Netherlands Bach Society

In 'Canonische Veränderungen', performed by Bernard Winsemius for All of Bach, everyone can immediately spot the traces of the famous Christmas chorale 'Vom Himmel hoch'. In Bach’s most virtuosic music, the ingenious interplay of themes and counter-themes is often difficult to unravel in the mass of sound. This is not the case here, as the melody is a stable factor and the ingenuity lies rather in the canon voices.

Dear NBS, I think you should really start recording all the other organ pieces played in concerts by these fabulous organists of the Netherlands. There are many great recordings of other instruments out there but Great recordings of organs pieces are rare. Even the conditions to have good recordings on organ pieces are rare; but you have everything; incredible organs! incredible halls!! incredible organists!!! incredible technicians!!!! It is not the matter of views, if you don't capture these magical moments it would be a great loss to humankind!!!!!

Yes I find it makes more sense to conclude with the absolutely crazy variation with four different canons in inversion on the chorale melody (an amazing feat in itself) and the incredible coda which entangles all the phrases of the chorale melody, because that coda is the contrapuncal climax of the set. And a coda is supposed to be the end part, isn't it? At any rate, Bach wrote it that way in the original version. But this is the later version 769a, which has it in the middle. Who knows why?

With the addition of the letter a in the BWV number, there are multiple variants of a work.

I think the differences are in the order of movements. I am not certain, but in BWV769 the variations with canons of the theme in the manuals comes at the end. I am more a fan of this BWV769a with said Variation in the middle because of the Symetry of the peice. What would be in favour of putting it in the End is that the Stretto ending said variation ends the entire peice also, which is effective! Greetings
