Not only the performance of all musicians of this project is, as we are used to hear again and again absolutely outstanding, but also the fantastic quality of the audio/ video recordings. At the end of the opening choral you can hear the reverberant sound of about 3-4 seconds of St.Martin and this is quite a difficult (whilst beautiful) athmosphere to record. I‘ve heardt hundreds of organ recordings, and afaik these are the most difficult to record. And a lot of them are not without problems. Not here, the first class conducting, singing, playing is absolutely met and on par by the technical supervisors. I can‘t but pull off my hat for all of you and say thank you so much.

The Netherlands Society is creating such a glorious expression of Bach that I imagine Bach in his lifetime might have hoped his work could sound so heavenly. This is concordant with my recent interest in the 18th Century, a time so rich in every human endeavor it seems to float above history for hundreds of years in either direction. That era gave us some of the greatest days of astronomy, biology, geology, engineering and chemistry, studies of government, trade, economy and political ferment, a deep appreciation of Classical Antiquity, monumental musical forms and tonal composition, germinal discoveries in medicine, physiology, anatomy, disease, sociology, and anthropology--and from some of the most astonishing persons who ever walked the Earth-including Newton, Hume, Euler, Handel, Linnaeus, Gauss, Leeuwenhoek, Couperin, Bernoulli, Dalton, Haydn, Laplace, Priestly, Lavoisier, Mozart, Lagrande, Diderot, Goethe, Leibniz, Galvani, Wollstonecraft, Schiller, De Gouge, Condorcet, Wordsworth, Goya, Kant, Constable, Volta, Franklin, Ingres, Lafayette, and Humboldt. Today the Enlightenment is a popular academic target for easy derision, but such derogation is shallow and cynical. A century of human aspiration against inhumanity and violence deserves both deep and broad reconsideration.

Since the Middle Ages, female voices were not used in church music because St. Paul wrote, "Women shall be silent in the church." This practice persisted in German churches until the 19th century. So you will understand that alto parts in church music in Bach's time were never sung by women. Historically, the term _countertenor_ did not refer to a particular voice type or voice range. In ancient scores you'll find alto-range and baritone-range parts both labelled "countertenor" in the same score. It was the falsettist Russel Oberlin who first used, or rather misused, the term _countertenor_ to describe his own voice type and range. The term continues to be misused today to refer to an adult male who sings alto-range parts in falsetto. Throughout Europe, Latin schools were established to train boys to sing the upper parts in church music. Bach, Haendel and Telemann each received their early musical training in a Latin school. Because of his fine soprano voice, the young Bach attended a Latin school on a scholarship. The St. Thomas School in Leipzig was a Latin School. Bach's own sons participated in the school's lessons. You will not find any voice parts labelled "countertenor" in any music from Bach's time. But from the background information I've provided, you will understand that the upper parts had to be sung by boys or by adult male falsettists, which we today incorrectly call "countertenors," thanks to Russell Oberlin. There was a falsettist on the payroll at the Weimar ducal court when Bach was composing cantatas there. Women were hired as singing maids. From reference letters Bach provided, we know that he also used falsettists in his Leipzig church music. These falsettists were townspeople or Bach's private students from the Leipzig university.

Interesting , yes. Horrible is a judgement our modern ears ought to hold in reserve. Bach wrote for the real world. There are players today in our world who can do justice to the trumpet parts without the shortcut of holes in the bore. BTW, these holes come with a price-- the expressive articulations of Bach's time are sacrificed for the clean performances we've come to expect from modern piccolo trumpets. Also missing are the pure intervals 3 natural trumpets can produce.. A vented trumpet is simply a kind of instrument entirely different from a natural uncompromised trumpet. These guys do fine, I must say. But I cringe when the cameraman focuses on their agile little fingers doing what their tongues, lungs and lips should be doing. Screed ending in 5...4...3...

beautiful cantata and lovely execution. I maybe would have preferred a more "booming" bass, especially considering the character of the aria. Here he gets a bit drowned by the rousing performance of the instruments and gives a slight feeling of insecurity, which goes against the text. It might just be a matter of sound balancing though.
