You are so very right. On a really terrible, awful wreck of a day, Bach will mend what's bleeding. Apparently, he did the same for his many, many friends in life. His house was always full of friends, neighbors and traveling strangers because his warmth and kindness drew people like a good fire on a dark night. . He was many things. Genuinely God-intoxicated, but profoundly earthy and with a risqué sense of humor. Could bury his young first wife, eleven of his children, most of his professional hopes, and eventually his eyesight, and still write music expressing the profoundest trust in and dependence on God. Would also fight like a tiger with a sore tooth if you deliberately messed with him or lied to him, as one of his bosses in Leipzig did over and over. . Brilliant--a fine mathematician, a linguist ( by age 20 or so he spoke five languages well, and possibly some of another two), a deep scholar of theology and scripture (for his time, his library was huge), a wine connoisseur and businessman, a calligrapher and engraver Could handle himself in a knife fight, which he had to do when a bunging musician he had called "a nannygoat bassoonist and rather a prick" jumped him in the street. He could play violin, viola, cello/viola da gamba, any keyboard whatever, all the recorders, most of the crossblown flutes, and the lute, all but the last to a professional standard. Teased his kids for being coffee junkies, but owned three or four coffeepots and apparently stayed fairly wired himself. :) . And, oh, the music! Exuberant, meltingly tender, intellectually rigorous and inventive beyond belief, profoundly sad, wonderfully dancy, often a couple of centuries ahead of its time,, and just plain mind-blowingly beautiful.
@jaikee94773 жыл бұрын
@@rainadkins4827 True! Evidence suggests that in Leipzig, when citizens had a problem, rather than going to the townhall, they first went to ask the Bachs for help. His household became a social institution. Perhaps it explains why Bach wrote all those angry letters to authorities. After all he was responsible for roughly 60 to 90 musicians, singers and their families and make sure they get their stew on the table.

Doubt removed. Quasthoff and the Rainer Kussmaul ensemble’s rendition is the more intimate one, besides, being a true ‘chamber music’ instrumentation, likely more authentic to the very short rehearsal times in Bach’s times (compose, rehearse and perform a cantata virtually every week).

This cantata is a long time favourite of mine and I only know it as sung by Dame Janet Baker. To hear it sung by the Bass is wonderful and credit is due to Thomas Bauer for his superb and moving performance. (Actually I'm a huge fan of the Bass voice as well as the Alto as opposed to the soprano and tenor) I do wish that the NBS credited the excellent oboist with his name. It was a compelling obbligato performance equal to the soloist. Credit also the the direction of Lars Ulrik Mortensen, some may not like his style but I do. To a cantata such as this his direction leads to a performance of beauty and sensitivity that I for one appreciate. This is very revealing performance for me hearing the bass sing rather than Alto and I have been very moved by it. Greetings as always to the NBS and it's viewers from Port Moresby PNG.
