Me too. The Stadtpfeifer were municipal employees, like Bach. Most German cities of any size had them, mostly from the later 1400s on. The Town Council whose inauguration this cantata was written for, definitely wanted to get their money's worth. BTW the statute says that as well as stimulating reverence for the benefit of the populace, they are to play also for the university's degree ceremonies,. I have to say I think that's a tradition needing revival. Anybody who survives the process to earn a doctorate deserves trumpets and drums at the ceremony!

You Tube has become the most important force for the dissemination and even interpretation of classical music. Where else can you learn so much so quickly? So what makes one weep with this performance, apart from the musical quality others have praised, is the fact that if everybody over 70 were kicked out of the church, there would be virtually nobody hearing it live. The same is true of most of the other endeavours of this type, the exceptions being the crowd performances in malls and stations, and the Christmas Oratorio in a German flat, which bring tears for the right reasons. My ha'porth for this performance is above all how Dijsktra gets the cuivre tone from the 4th trumpet: you know why there are 4 of them. Nobody else manages this. Alongside that is the way everybody gets stuck in. Dijkstra has had stick for clowning, but it is his way and here it works tremendously: do you ever see an orchestra elsewhere get so involved, particularly in this sort of music? And the choir, not least "the pride of Lichtenstein" over there on the right. The engineering, to capture this, as well as the elusive balance of this particular combination of voices and instruments is absolutely remarkable.

Each piece another brick in this vast edifice. 🙏A grand opening choir (thanks, among others, to the brass)! Thomas Hobbs (tenor) once again touching. And Alex Potter, I cannot resist, I abdicate in front of this deeply moving voice. And the chorus "Der Herr hat Guts an uns getan" is just beautiful... Before the new intervention of the countertenor and the final choral short leaves me speechless in front of so much power... It’s huge... Divine... if God exists... but Sebastian’s music exists, and that’s good. Thanks to all the NBS team, not to mention the technicians of the shadow who offer us images and sound shots irreproachable.😇 🙏Un chœur introductif grandiose (merci, entre autres, aux cuivres) !

@@Reino_X Hello Reino X, For several decades I have been a fan of Bach’s instrumental music: Variations Goldberg (Gould), The Well Tempered Keyboard (Richter), Partitas for keyboard, violin, or flute, Suites for cello, Suites Anglaises, Françaises... Except the 4 suites for orchestras of which I am less fan... Without forgetting the Brandenburg Concertos... Do I have to convince you again? If so, then visit my KZbin channel : I regularly post arrangements that I made from the instrumental work. Coming up in a couple of weeks: The prelude to the G Major suite for Cello, as well as the menuet of the Partita for keyboard in Bb Major BWV 825 or the German of the Partita for keyboard in D Major BWV 828 that I still work on... English Translation: 1. (Psalm 147:12-14) 1. Chorus Praise the Lord, Jerusalem, praise, Sion, your Good! For He secures the bolts of your portals and blesses your children within; He provides peace for your borders. 2. 2. Recitative T Blessed land, fortunate city, where the Lord Himself keeps His hearth and fire! What better reward can God provide than to send honor to dwell in a land? With what more bounteous favor can he bless a city than to have goodness and loyalty greet each other, to have righteousness and peace never tire of kissing, never weary, never sated with being regarded precious, even this He has fulfilled in deed? Therefore here is the conclusion: blessed land, fortunate city! 3. Arie T Wohl dir, du Volk der Linden, Wohl dir, du hast es gut! Wieviel an Gottes Segen Und seiner Huld gelegen, Die überschwenglich tut, Kannst du an dir befinden. 3. Aria T Good fortune, you people of the lindens, good fortune, you have it good! As much of God's blessing and graciousness together, which fill to overflowing, can you find in your midst. 4. Rezitativ B So herrlich stehst du, liebe Stadt! Ja! Was bedarf es viel? 4. Recitative B So gloriously you stand, dear city! You people, who God has chosen as His heirs! Yet it is well! and yet well again! when it is taken to heart and rightly perceived through whom the Lord allows the blessing to grow. Yes! What more do you need? The witness is already there, our heart and awareness will expound it to us, that the goodness we see among us, besides God, is present through prudent authority and through its wise governance. Therefore be prepared, dear people, for true thanks, otherwise even your walls would complain against you! 5. Arie A Die Obrigkeit ist Gottes Gabe, Ja selber Gottes Ebenbild. 5. Aria A Authority is God's gift, yes, even the very image of God. Whoever will not submit to its power must also forget God completely: how else would His word be fulfilled? 6. Rezitativ S Nun! Recitative S Now! we acknowedge it and bring to You, o highest God, an offering of our thanks for its sake. In addition for these days, the day which the Lord has made for us, for you, dear Town Fathers, in part to release you from your burdens, in part also to bring upon you sleepless hours of worry with a new election, a faithful people sigh thus with heart and mouth together: 7. 7. Chorus The Lord has done good things for us, therefore we all rejoice. He gazes upon our faithful fathers, and supports them in untold and long-lasting years in the house of their government, therefore we would praise Him. 8. Rezitativ A Zuletzt! 8. Recitative A Finally! Since You have established us as Your people, then grant that, from Your devout ones even a poor prayer may reach Your ears, and hear! yes, hear! Our mouths, our hearts and souls sigh sorely. 9. Choral Hilf deinem Volk, Herr Jesu Christ, Und segne, was dein Erbteil ist. Amen. ("German Te Deum," verse 4) 9. Chorale Help Your people, Lord Jesus Christ, and bless Your inheritance. Look after and care for them at all times and exalt them in eternity! Amen. Ben Joseph Cuyacot Wow! I appreciate hearing your feedback. Every time I hear one of Bach’s cantatas for the first time, I have to look up the lyrics so that I may know what they’re about. After all, the main reason Bach composed them was not merely for the enjoyment of the music but rather, so that the lyrics could speak to his audience. I haven’t posted any more translations because I’ve been so busy lately, but when ever I get a chance to watch some more cantatas, I’ll do so. Thank you, once again, for your comment. I've been listening to all Bach cantatas starting at BWV 1. There are truly remarkable works in them. BWV 119 is masterfully crafted and stuff. But from about BWV 105 onward I've been entranced by the level of inspiration in Bach's writing. That element is just not there for me in this work. But I trust the new town council was gratified by it.

In my honest opinion, the BWV order is not the ideal for listening to the cantatas, since the numbers are quite arbitrary at times. I've been listening as close as possible to the chronological order of their creation. At least at the beginning the evolution of the cantatas is inspiring.
@aarondyer.pianist

@@pietarimajuri9753 That's a very good point. My reason for listening to them in this way is two-fold: First I cataloged them in Excel just to familiarize myself with the body of work and how it corresponded to the liturgical calendar and they are in BWV order there; second, I listen while I work, so I can more easily keep track of what's next if I do it in BWV order. What I could do it just sort my worksheet by date of premier. It would be interesting to see how it sounds that way. Thanks for mentioning it!

@Netherland Bach Society: I truly love the four trumpets, but is that the original score? Bach viewed the three trumpets as emblematic of trinity, as much as he viewed the single trumpet a symbol of the divine voice (chatzozerah or shofar, according to the old testament), or as in the ascension cantata, Jesus.

Mister Franenberg is describing it here on a video of the same ensemble (BWV 75). The Violon was the most important instrument in Baroque orchestras but apparently, due to the Cellist Nikolaus Harnoncourt, it isn't found as often anymore. This splendid music seems Handel rather than good old JSB!

What's the point of such comparisons? Is Handel supposed to be the gold standard?

@@herrickinman9303 I apologize if my comment was obscure. I only thought that this beautiful cantata had the majestic military sonorities of the royal court of England, represented so well by Handel. No comparison intended. I just reviewed the liturgical cantatas of Bach and the difference with Preise Jerusalem den Herrn was so huge. There are no gold standards in music, or in any other art. There are no gold standards among us humans. Beauty is not quantifiable.

Indeed, it is "a town council inauguration cantata", not a "usual" circumstance for Bach's cantatas. Not sure if Bach had access to some of Handel's ceremonial music at the time (he had access at some level to his opera music later), but we can sure both of them had knowledge of previous French, Italian and German music for official circumstances (+ English music for Handel of course). Could be interesting to see what Telemann had already produced at the time for such circumstances for instance.

Bach had been composing "ceremonial" and congratulory music since Muehlhausen (1706). Handel didn't invent the genre. Where do you suppose Handel got his ideas for ceremonial music? Bach hardly needed to look to Handel for models. Don't assume that because you think a piece by Bach sounds like Handel, that Bach must have been inspired by Handel. (I'm not saying you made that assumption.)

@@herrickinman9303, if you don't say I made that assumption, why do you answer that then? ;-) Nevertheless, you seem to have some great reluctance only to start to think Bach could have been inspired by Handel or considered his music as model (not for this cantata, this is quite clear), I wonder why since it is known Bach was very interested (to say the least) in a lot of other composers's music, including Handel.
