Bach - Cantata Schleicht, spielende Wellen... BWV 206 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society

The cantata 'Schleicht, spielende Wellen, und murmelt gelinde', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is a birthday tribute to the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Although Friedrich August lived in Dresden, it was customary to celebrate his birthday and other special court occasions in Leipzig as well. Bach was already working on this cantata in 1734, when Friedrich August had just been crowned King of Poland. When the regent announced at the eleventh hour that he was coming in person to Leipzig to celebrate his birthday, Bach gave preference to another work. Maybe Schleicht, spielende Wellen was not yet completely finished. In the end, the piece was performed in 1736, in Café Zimmermann. A later performance (1740), at the Zimmerman Garden, has also been documented. For that reason the Netherlands Bach Society also performed this cantata in the open air.

the impromptu duet between Maria Keohane's radiant voice and stage presence and the birds in the trees, that then becomes a quartet with a pair of flutes cooing like turtle doves is almost an accidental essay in the Baroque taste for mimesis: it is the most beautifully happy thing in the world right now for me and I am crying tears of joy I got to see it, thank you all.

and that mini recitative before the final chorus is ecstatically beautiful singing, good lord she is a marvel of nature and such impeccable technique, she makes it look easy and I think she is the most beautiful woman in the world ever for the length of that phrase.

To have been present at this performance under Utrecht’s open sky would have been a privilege and an experience to be remembered and cherished for ever. An outdoor musical event is always special and brings with it technical problems to be overcome, not least weather related. Everything has to be just right and here NBS pulled it off expertly. Bach could really enrich the scoring when a patron was paying the bills - 3 flutes!! I would have loved to be one of those listening from the upstairs windows - perhaps now necessity will encourage more outdoor concerts... (I love you, NBS)

and what a marvelous work this is, when made to sound effortless like this, no wonder some of the performers are seen smiling as they listen to their colleagues. that bass aria is so quirky and interesting when performed so well and is musically the equal of anything else in his vocal writing. i love the ebullience of the invention in the whole cantata, which i think deserves to be far better known. there's a zaniness and intricacy to the writing throughout and the opening chorus here reminds me of "Erfreut euch ihr Herzen" with those rushing scales.

Speaking as someone who played trumpet and tuba at football games, the tendency is indeed to over-blow, which causes notes to go sharp. All the more so, I think, with these old-style instruments, because the lack of keys/valves means more is done with the lips and breath. I would expect them to nail the intonation, but it IS a testament to their skill that they are able to do so.

Well...this exact type of cantata was often performed outdoors in Bach's time. As were his orchestral suites, for example..."in the gardens of the Zimmerman coffee house in Leipzig", conducted by Bach himself, according to a contemporary flyer. You are of course entitled to your opinion. :-) But I for one cannot think of a more perfect summertime concert...the world's most sublime music performed under a mighty Linden tree, the most iconic tree of Saxony (often mentioned in secular Bach cantata lyrics like this one), with the sound of swifts soaring overhead occasionally leaking into the ambient mics. A sound Bach would undoubtedly have associated with summer, as most central Europeans do... ;-)
