Bach - Five little preludes BWV 939-943 - Alard | Netherlands Bach Society

The Five little preludes, performed by Benjamin Alard for All of Bach, are presumed to have originated for teaching purposes, although it is not clear when Bach wrote them or for whom. The originals have been lost, while the copies date from 1726 at the earliest. From this, we can deduce that the pieces could have been composed as early as 1717, but possibly also twenty years later.

Bach's greatness is shown in his little works as it is also shown in large ones. Those klein preludes, the two part inventions, the Ana Magdalena's Notebook, etc., are indeed true masterpieces, precious musical gems, in spite of their shortness and that they are relatively easy to play.

I think that is very nice indeed, and it makes me think what a prodigy Wilhelm Friedemann must have been. They sound such virtuoso pieces under your hands, Sir! I have thought that the first two are actually organ pieces, since both have long pedal notes, but you decorate them perfectly for the harpsichord. Lovely harpsichord, from Joel, whom I have met several times. I am intrigued to know what happens to the decoration on the lid if, as I seem to see, the flap folds forwards rather than backwards. Or are my eyes deceiving me? Anyway, lovely, thank you.
