The notation in this recording was based on the Czerny edition available free from the IMSLP Music Library: goo.gl/iMEQan
In this recording I used the 4th harmonic pedal in resonance position only. The harmonic pedal was invented by Denis de La Rochefordière.

Thank you so much for posting these videos along with the score. It's a blessing to be growing up in a time where one can use technology to assist the learning of an instrument. I prop my laptop up on my keyboard, fullscreen it, and off I go. Just having an aerial visual of your hands is tremendously helpful.

I have been starting my mornings with a Paul Barton video. Am loving this! Used to have 1-3 children in my home practicing piano. I miss that 2-3 hrs a day of music. This fills the void perfectly.

I love your interpretation, but why do you not do all the ornements ? Thanks
@ampac
@ampac 17 күн бұрын
ornamentation is a matter of interpretation and “good taste”, like Bach and other Baroque composers said. There are mandatory ornaments in this piece that Paul Barton is playing, along with several other ornaments that are not and can be omitted at the choice of the interpreter. Moreover, there are different editions of this piece with very different choices of ornamentation, some of which only make sense at a faster tempo. Same reasoning applies to many Sarabandes and slow Baroque pieces.

Sir, this is my favorite version of my favorite piece. Whenever I want to listen to the Aria, I listen to your performance... which is perfect in every way. Perfect for the ears, perfect for the eyes... and also perfect for my brain. I'm trying to play this piece on a flute, and this video is doing wonders. Thank you very much sir!! (From Samutsakorn)

Sublime, Mr Barton!! A question.. Can the baroque ornaments be interpreted differently by different pianists? I have heard aria, in different tempi and with different versions of the ornaments.. Hence the doubt :)

I wanted to get some help on the fingering for this piece, because I think my fingering is not the best, but I was surprised to see that you don't use the same fingering when you play for the first time and then when you play the repetition. Is it intentional, or do you come up with the fingering real time? (Which I really doubt...)
@ampac
@ampac 17 күн бұрын
This piece is extremely easy to be sight read for an advanced player that understands polyphonic music. I doubt that Paul, or most players at this level, need to think about fingering to play this Aria fluently. The rest of the Goldberg Variationen are a whole different story though ;-)

Hi good sir Paul and everyone, may i ask, can you give me a hint when to use a trill using a below notes, like on the 3rd bar of this piece , the first G you trilled the notes from below, then the second one you trilled above
@ampac
@ampac 17 күн бұрын
in bar 1 and 3 the first ornament is not a trill but an inverted mordent and is played from the note that is written. The second ornament is also not a trill but a Vorschleife (slide) from the upper auxiliary (because the left side of the symbol is pointing upwards), which is realized from the note above. Actually, there are no trills in this piece at all. Get a basic ornamentation guide for Baroque music to understand how each of these ornaments is to be played.

I do consider getting getting the Czerny edition, but I fear it being in more romantic/Beethovenish notation. Is the score shown on the screen from the edition of Czerny? And also, great playing as always, and I think the tempo is great 👍🏼

One question: at 0:20 there is a special trill where it says in my book you have to play a, g, f sharp, g, a, g, but in every recording including yours it is different. Did I get something wrong? 🤔
@lettersquash
@lettersquash 3 жыл бұрын
No, I think you're right. The second trilled G, I think you mean. The first should be a simple G,F#,G and the second, according to my book, which shows all the notes of the trills as they should be played, goes A, G, F#, G, and then repeated A, Gs (I haven't counted them, but a good lot). Paul here starts on the F#, missing the first A and G. I'm no expert, and I don't know if there's an absolutely correct or wrong way, and certainly baroque music allowed a great deal of ornamentation by the player (usually increased on each repeated pattern). Some do trills very quick, some rock back and forth lazily. This piece is quite a challenge, probably as much to score as to play. The other thing I notice is the grace notes, which are often described as a quick delicate note before the main one, here are often held a fairly long time as part of the rubato (and some hang on the last F# for ages).

, I seem to have misplaced the sore of the Goldberg variations with your fingerings that ease the difficulty of using a single keyboard with a score written for a 2-keyboard instrument which I have used to great advantage. Where can I download another copy. Philip John BSc (Lond) MA (Cantab) . your drive links don't respond 0

why are the grace notes played like 1/4th notes?
@ampac
@ampac 17 күн бұрын
It is a matter of interpretation. Appoggiaturas in Baroque pieces are often used to add what we call rubato today (and was called notes inegales/unequal notes during the Baroque) and/or to add tension before the resolution . They do not need to be played metronomically (as explained in books from Rameau and CPE Bach), especially in an Aria like this at a slow tempo. Gould and others play them even longer to add dissonance and tension before the resolution.

Mr Barton I admire your work, but nobody can play Golberg Variations like Glenn Gould.

Glenn Gould rushed through the pieces and really spoils them to my taste. I prefer a much slower performance that gives more emphasis to embellishments and the subtlety of Bach.

@@luissalazarweil9775 The 1955 Goldbergs are my favorite. Gould is just a master at work, flying through the music like a bird through the air. The 1981 is more meditative, which is nice too. I just prefer the flurry and precision of the earlier version.

@@vision_immortal I respect that, and find it fascinating. However, the 1955 recording, though certainly amazing, it is a little too frantic for my personal taste. I Associate The Goldberg Variations with calmness and peacefulness.... That's why I prefer the 1981 recording. Both versions are amazing!
