Great congratulations for the French Horn player and also for Arleen Auger (RIP) and Anne Sofie von Otter. Perhaps the best interpretation of the B minor Mass.

I had the good fortune to see Helmuth Rilling conducting his Stuttgart orchestra and choir in the B minor Mass in Santiago de Chile a few years ago. The overwhelming feeling was of euphoria confronted with this majestic beauty. Then the feeling of almost excessive perfection; the orchestra and choir were so insanely perfect almost to the point of excess. It was evident that both orchestra and choir had achieved an deep knowledge of the music through innumerable presentations and practices, and it was obvious that Rilling had became a part of each musicians. It was, in the full sense of the word, a performance. One to keep in one's soul for the rest of the life. What a privilege to be a witness of this musical miracle. Thanks for posting.

@@meme-mx4eq My humblest apologies. As you were traveling together I assumed Rilling was a stable member of the ensemble. Moreover, the function was announced giving this erroneous impression. As to Karl Munchinger who founded the orchestra he died in 1990. Somebody could have been selected as stable conductor.

I sang as a young student in this performance (that's me at 24:35 - see if you can spot me!) I spent the entire 'Bach Jahr' singing and studying conducting at the Bachakademie and we toured all over - Japan, South America and all through Europe - well over 300 concerts. It was (and still is) the greatest extended musical experience of my life.

This comment is about the first Kyrie being too slow. Some decades ago I was listening to a music professor in NYC discussing several performances while playing the records. One version stood out as its Kyrie tempo was the slowest of the lot. The professor said that if he were conducting it, he would probably take it a bit faster. Nevertheless, he felt that this slow version had a lot to recommend it and that he had to think about. I don't recall the conductor's name, but it might've been Maestro Rilling. Oh well. At that time I had one box of LPs of the Bm Mass conducted by Richter who did a fine job, in my humble opinion. Now, decades later, I felt like hearing the Bm Mass. This time, instead of going back to Richter I decided to give Helmuth RIlling a try, and am happy to say that this version is a joy to listen to and so beautiful! And watching Maestro Rilling conduct is fun. So when I was confronted with the slower Kryie, it seemed so very right. Why? Because the chorus is singing to heaven and imploring the Lord to have Mercy on mankind. It is natural to ask for mercy slowly. After all are you going to give the Lord the bum's rush? So, for this serious request the slower tempo appropriately adds gravitas

I like Rilling's rendering of the B minor Mass. I believe his tempo responds to the solemnity of the religious experience. We are talking eternal salvation here, is is the XVIII century. I wonder why most German conductors chose a slower tempo, while Spanish, English, Nederlanders, go for smaller ensembles and faster tempos. Perhaps the German soul of Bach needs to be translated by German conductors? I had the privilege of attending a more recent representation of Bm Mass in Santiago the year 2012. Rilling conducted the Bach Akademie orchestra and choir. First and foremost was the experience of perfection. The synchrony, unity of sound, were amazing. The multiplicity of voices and instruments generated a unitary mass of sound that would be impossible with smaller ensembles and requires as a matter of course many years of uninterrupted practice. An unforgettable experience.

Bach's B-Minor mass - is carried by a passionate Faith - Did God feel such excitement at that first Christmas when He finally was able to send Jesus, the second Adam to give us a New Beginning? It is great to see Rilling at his younger years conveying the spirit of one of Bach's Creation - isn't this one of the function of a Conductor - to represent the deeper meaning of a musical work - besides all the technicalities involved? Merry Christmas 2019 and Foehliche Weihnachten....

How lovely to see and hear this mighty Mass played on modern instruments, by orchestral and choral forces larger than a football team, and in properly slow tempo (no, the opening "Kyrie" is not too slow - it's perfect). Rilling is a master. If you still haven't purchased his Bach boxed set on Sony, do so without more ado. And I'm saying this as a Bach non-fan. But the two Passions and the Mass are essential to the collection of everybody not entirely insensitive to music.

There are several recordings out there that take it as slow or slower than this -- Klemperer comes to mind. The wonderful recording with Richter, Janowitz, Topper etc. seems about the same speed as this, and that's my very favourite at the moment.

His beat is SO FAR off from the music many times here! Kind of drives me crazy. I studied with him for a few years. The focus comes and goes... I do like the Kyrie tempo myself, though his holding out the last chord for so long was incromprehensible...

The tempo in the Kyrie is slow in comparison to many but it is a prayer and should not be in any way rushed. The recording, however, is not great and the choir sings with a lack of fluidity and too much staccato . I am not impressed overall
