At last--an overdotted prelude, by the great Andras Schiff no less! This is how it should go--don't be a slave to the score!

Does anyone know where the descriptive titles come from, like "Aria pathetica Ricercar"? I've never seen them in any printed edition.

Nowhere to be found, I also checkd the scan (facsimile) the Notenbuchlein fur WF Bach, IMSLP 593560, but also there it only says "Praeludium" (Prelude). Could it be that Andras Schiff has coined the term? Or that it is from his teachers - Andras Schiff was born in Budapest, child of two Holocaust survivors - maybe Hungary had a tradition for assigning type names to the preludes of Bach, which evidently are written in different modes, different types of keyboard-styles. What is a ricercare, then? Wikipedia jump in to help: ... verb ricercare which means 'to search out; to seek'; many ricercars serve a preludial function to "search out" the key or mode of a following piece. A ricercar may explore the permutations of a given motif, and in that regard may follow the piece used as illustration. The term is also used to designate an etude or study that explores a technical device in playing an instrument, or singing.

@@donaldaxel"Ricercare" is the ancient term used for "fugato" motiv. (correction from ""ricercare"" and ""fugatto"" wrong spelling)

Bach used the antiquated Italian term ricercare (ricercar, in German). The word refers to a polyphonic work common during the 16th and 17th centuries that employs counterpoint, a composition that precedes the fugue.

@@Quim1441 please try to write correctly in Italian: it's ricercare and fugato. Fugatto in italian means "oncewasacat".

@@rachm06 I'm going to correct it right now. My apologies to my italian "brothers" for my ignorance on the language. Greetings from the east of Spain, València. Our valencian language is very similar in some words to italian, specially in verbs. Also our society, I think.

At 03:30 -- Based on the light above him, and the way he begins (as if after another piece) I wonder if it is a recording from the Albert Hall Concert, when Andras Schiff played the whole Well Tempered?
