The suspension dissonances in the opening fugue exposition are just so absolutely out of this world.
@Evvivaverdi2 ай бұрын
What is the meaning of ''suspension dissonances''? Thanks in advance.
@maniak17682 ай бұрын
@Evvivaverdi Well, in Baroque music, there are essentially three types of dissonances: Passing notes (transitus), anticipations and suspensions. There are of course a few exceptions and workarounds, some of them Bach's very speciality. But basically, in a suspension, a dissonance on a downbeat has to be prepared, where most voices were a consonance on the upbeat before. The dissonance then has to be resolved by the following upbeat. The third chord of the prelude is already a dissonance, a seventh over the f in the bass, resolving to a sixth, d. But there are much more intricate and spicy dissonances used in this prelude in the following fugato sections.

Bach wrote A LOT of "most beautiful music". For me: I celebrate the man's whole catalogue. I have all three "Gesamtwerk"-collection of records that are available. Bach never wrote anything weak, sure there are personal favourites, but what makes Bach the greatest composer of all time, among other things, is that he did not wreak any of his havoc. Every Cantata is beautiful and of sound technical quality. Some moments in Bach are better than other sure, but we have to consider his complete works in order to do justice to his credentials.

I say dread because you know the video itself will be the best quality recording and cinematography of the piece that exists, but you are conflicted with how their interpretation will fare against your favorite recording? That was this piece for me. Thank goodness I had nothing to fear. Thankfully the organ is pitched a whole step higher than played to make it entirely different. But of course NBS comes through with another wonderfully done video! Bravo y'all!

I see a number of comments on the Tempo. For those who don’t understand how organs worked in Bach’s day, this is a tracker action instrument. All the opening of the valves comes from the force of the performer’s fingers. It is a completely different animal from a modern or re-engineered organ where the valves open electrically. The technique switch is almost as tough as going from piano to organ. Most organists can’t make it (I was one).

Oh boy I'm in for a ride when I switch from my toaster to a tracker instrument

Most high quality modern organs still have trakker actions on the attached console, and a separate electric console. Newest ones even have proportional electric actions like the new Rieger organ at Helsinki Musiikkitalo (124 speaking stops) where the pallet valves open at the speed the keys are pressed. Even the stop sliders can be opened only partly from the electric stage console, sliders moving proportionally with the stop tab. The worst are the 60 to 100 year old pneumatic ones which can have a one second delay between pressing the kay and the pipe speaking, with different time lags between manuals...

@oliverkentish9468 Жыл бұрын
@@BertHassoKEMNITZ-ls1prThe hymn tune "St. Anne" (common metre 86.86) to which the text is most often sung was composed by William Croft in 1708 whilst he was the organist of St Anne's Church, Soho: hence the name of the tune. It first appeared anonymously in the Supplement to the New Version of the Psalms, 6th edition in 1708. It was originally intended to be used with a version of Psalm 62. It was not until sometime later when set to Watts' text that the tune gained recognition. William Croft as a choirboy, circa 1690. National Portrait Gallery, London. Later composers subsequently incorporated the tune in their own works. For example, George Handel used the tune in an anthem entitled, "O Praise the Lord". J. S. Bach's Fugue in E-flat major BWV 552 is often called the "St. Anne" in the English-speaking world, because of the similarity of its subject to the first line of the hymn tune, though there is some debate as to whether Bach used the actual tune after hearing it, or coincidentally created himself the very similar tune used as the fugal theme. Young Bach's inspirator and mentor Dieterich Buxtehude, church administrator and organist of St Mary's in Lübeck in north Germany, used the same first line of the hymn tune as theme for the (first) fugue of his Praeludium-pedaliter in E major for organ.
