Well, this was an unexpected part of my trip. Had the best time at the Museum of San Colombano in Bologna, Italy, playing on harpsichords and fortepianos at the Tagliavini Collection. Grazie Mille, Mr. Liuwe Tamminga!

BACH’S KEYBOARD COMPOSITIONS WERE COMPOSED FOR THE HARPSICHORD AND CLAVICHORD. J.S. BACH NEVER KNEW THE MODERN PIANO OR EVEN THE FORTEPIANO. SO YEAH MORE MODERN PIANIST SHOULD BE EQUALLY AT HOME ON THE HARPSICHORD AND CLAVICHORD.

@@coralreef909 Yes, they were composed for the Harpsichord and Clavichord. but I think that Bach knew what a Piano is because Piano was invented around the year 1700 and Bach died in 1750.

I have always loved the sound of harpsichords, and there's nothing quite like that subtle crunch(Due to the plectrum apparatus instead of hammers that pianos have.) under the finger-tips, as you press the keys down. Thank you, Tiffany Poon, for sharing your amazing experience with these beautiful old instruments. :)

Any music lover with the good fortune to visit Bologna must make every effort to visit San Colombano. The museum is housed in a gorgeous 16th century oratory and has on display one of the world's most extensive collections of historical pianos.. Public concerts are held several times a month with many of the ancient instruments in starring roles.

@@andresgunther Surprisingly though, the historical Chopin competition was about a year ago. Find the KZbin channel "The Chopin Institute" or so (the organisation in Poland which organises the "main" Chopin competition), they have the recordings of the livestreams of all stages (yes, they did livestream everything) and some highlighted pieces. More to say, they also have the recordings from the festival "Chopin and his Europe" - also including period instruments. A vital place for HIP lovers.

J.S. BACH’S GOLDBERG VARIATIONS WERE COMPOSED FOR A HARPSICHORD WITH TWO MANUELS. MORE DIFFICULT TO PLAY ON THE MODERN PIANO WITH JUST A SINGLE MANUEL AS YOUR FINGERS SOMETIME COLLIDE IN PASSAGES WHERE BOTH THE RIGHT AND LEFT HANDS HAVE A COMMON NOTE THAT THEY NEED TO PLAY AT THE SAME TIME ESPECIALLY IF THE NOTE HAS ALREADY BEEN DEPRESSED AND SUSTAINED WHILE THE OTHER HAND IS PLAYING THAT SAME NOTE AS PART OF BUSY MOVING PASSAGE WORK OR SCALE. HAPPENS ALSO IN THE WELL TEMPERED CLAVIER AS WELL. MAKES MORE SENSE TO PERFORM THESE ON THE INSTRUMENT THEY WERE INTENDED FOR. ALSO THE ITALIAN CONCERTO WRITTEN FOR A HARPSICHORD WITH TWO MANUELS TO CONTRAST THE THE SOLO WITH THE TUTTI IN AN ACTUAL CONCERTO AND TO CONTRAST LOUD AND SOFT DYNAMICS. YOU HAVE TO TRY TO IMITATE THIS ON THE MODERN PIANO.

I have visited the museum twice , on the first time I attended a Concert with Tellemman compositions from harpsichord and flutes and at very end they told us that there was a surprise for for the audience, so we went into another room where they play Tellemman compositions with flutes and scores from the exhibition . So was really great. Thanks for the video. Maybe one day you could come to Portugal for a concert .

It’s great that the Curator recognised your talents and allowed you to sit and play those wonderful old instruments in the Bologna collection, but it was also great that you included us by sharing your experience. Thank you. You are indeed ‘a pianist first’. I once went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and marvelled at the few beautiful keyboard instruments on display, but ‘understandably’ they were ‘encased‘ behind glass and silent, their beauty thus diminished because they could not be heard. For a brief moment there the Curator had the ‘musical sense’ to permit you to bring them back to life.

Tiffany, it shows that you were in heaven. I once went to e Chopin performance by one of the greatest pianists in the world of the past 50 years. In a large hall. On a full size concert Steinway. Everything mf was played ff and so on. The intimacy was completely lost. Some time later, I went to another concert in the series. The famed pianist had reported ill and was now replaced by a stand in. Speed daemon. All the notes were perfect - not a single miss. But no soul. I actually prefer the sound of the Steinway over old instruments. Question: after you played these period instruments, do you play the same notes differently on the Steinway? (I would hope so ;) )

That was very enjoyable indeed, a bit of an ear opener. I'd like to see you given the opportunity to have 3 of these pianos, your choice, plus a harpsichord on a rotating stage, for a concert of matching period music. I think it would be a sell out. Certainly a full harpsichord concert should be on you wish list.
