The Quodlibet was a type of improvised harmony where the singers would improvise on popular themes. Usually, the lyrics would have partially humorous or malicious content, but conducted with innocence. Bach's family was famous of doing this type of presentation in their town, the young bach would even go to nearby town do similar acts for some money (Chorgeld).

Too many people seem to believe that Bach was just that stern, eminent scholar and genius looking down at us from those paintings. He also was a rather down to earth man, loving father, husband and a social institution in his town, responsible for a lot of students, musicians and their families.

@graupner13453 жыл бұрын
Bach's sense of humour was well and truly disposed of in the 19th century. So it's about time we got it back. We tend to credit Haydn as being the first "famous" composer to consider it "safe" to put a lot of humour in music. This is not true - the secular and sacred music of Bach and his contemporaries and friends (like Telemann, Graupner, Heinichen, Zelenka etc.) is peppered with comical touches. Graupner probably had his congregation rolling in the aisles on several occasions judging by some of his cantatas!

This was really wonderful. Many thanks to everyone. 👍❤️ (But it would have been far more wonderful with English subtitles.... although there are two links below, from NBS, to a rather lengthy, insinuating, bawdy and hilarious English translation.) Even though Bach never wrote an opera (that we currently know of, at least), his secular choral/vocal works (this piece, and the Coffee, Hunting and Peasant cantatas, etc.) give us tantalizing hints as to what a Bach opera might sound like. They'd have been truly magnificent, no doubt - like everything else he composed !

Sehr gut gesungen. My father kept a small boat for 4 Persons in Berlin and painted the word Backtrog on the boat. People in other boats on the Wannsee in Berlin admired the wording and thought that my father (professor for civil law at the Free University Berlin) was the head of the baking society. What I am missing is the Alto voice. Really excellent is here the use of the German language, which is almost impossible to express correctly by all singers coming from Anglo/American countries. Chapeau !

@yousafe0073 жыл бұрын
It is in fact the same price, the voices here are sung. The first 8 bar/ of the Goldbergs are based on a very common base line during that time, and that exact baseline is used over and over in each of the little variations in this Quodlibet. The base line is in fact that of a Chaconne, hence its commonality
