‘Hall of the Mountain King’ is the amazing new album from the brilliant musical partnership between a world class symphonic rock band featuring, Jonny Smale on guitar along with virtuoso violinists Nina Heidenreich and Ben Payen, Bob Carruthers on keyboards and the London Symphonia conducted by James Gambold. The results are stunning.
Sinfӧnicca’s Hall of the Mountain King follows in the tradition of the great seventies instrumental albums such as Camel’s ‘Snow Goose’ and ‘Hamburger Concerto’ by Focus. Sinfӧnicca perform powerful hard rock/heavy metal interpretations of the greatest hits by Bach, Holst, Tchaikovsky, Berlioz, Vivaldi and Grieg. Included on the album are six sublime heavy rock instrumentals which draw upon the likes of the famous ‘Toccata and Fugue’, ‘Mars Bringer of War’,‘Symphonie Fantastique’, ‘The Four Seasons ‘, ‘The 1812 Overture’ and ‘Hall of The Mountain King’. I was a teenager in the 1980s. I was trying to figure out what type of music I truly liked. I happened to hear Bach's Toccata and Fugue on a pipe organ, and I loved it. I became a fan of Bach, and of Classical music. But I encountered a lot of different stuff over the years and found that I enjoy and appreciate all styles of music. This. Is. Awesome. I really enjoyed it. The dancing zombies at the end gave me a good laugh, too.

Love it! No matter how it's played, Bach always rules. Even in this genre Bach's is still powerful if not more powerful. This a brilliant reinterpretation of a classic in a chaotc time of fear and unrest.

Believe it or not, Bach *was* the heavy metal of his time. He was often challenged by Church leaders for the music he played for services. Every piece he wrote, however, was written for the glory of God alone. I said in another comment that he always signed his pieces SDG or Soli Deo Gloria or Glory to God Alone.

A few points to make, firstly a great tune never gets old, secondly, never forget that almost every contemporary portrayal of a classical composer based on accounts of their lives shows a tortured soul pushing at the edge of an envelope exactly as the latter-day greats have. It is probably not so hard to imagine how the Blackmores, Schenkers, Guilberts, Lifesons and Satrianis et al of the present might have moved in the same circles as the Bach's, Beethoven's, Tchaikovskis and Holst's of the past, it is no mere coincidence that so often a rock concert will begin with a classical intro, the instruments may have changed but the ideas come from the same place and I do not believe the greats of the past would not have marveled at the musicianship and the technique of the like of Eddie Van Halen in full flow.
