In the Art of Fugue recording by Munchinger in 1965, this was final last track. After the hour or so of listening to the rich vibrato treatment the rest of AOF, then to hear this piece was the serene icing on the cake. When the first violins play the chorale melody at 00:48, they do it with no vibrato, I'm sure intentionally. This was the magical touch for me. The non-vibrato gives a ghostly coolness that speaks "no fear of death now." I have performed this with people as a standalone piece. That non-vibrato effect doesn't have the impact as when Deathbed Chorale is played in the context of AOL. I think it it is an incredible piece that deserves to be programmed more often.

Very beautiful! I could also imagine this a cappella.

I believe this is the last section in "Art of the Fugue" I played this with my string quartet.

This work isn't considered as part of the Art of Fugue, per se, but since it was written just after the final unfinished fugue, it is very fitting to be played at the end of a concert featuring the Art of Fugue.

i think its a realisation bach dictated to a transcriber as he lay dying. for the unfinished fugue..
