Dont worry! Bach is only here in this anatomy lab for organs to examine the acoustics of this building. His intention is that someone shall play the harpsichord in this room, not the organ. To play the organ in this room seems a little macabre, doesn´t it?

Sometimes I feel lonely and depressed, and in those times especially, I feel like no one understands me. Except for Bach. It's like his music is speaking and saying - I feel your pain, lad. So when I feel alienated from life, Bach always has something to offer. The solace for my soul and some peace of mind.

Maybe it is in Bach´s rock-steady belief in God, and how he every Sunday worshiped this God in form of a new Cantata, that you and I like this music so much? We miss that strong belief today, but we tend to like this music because of its strong belief , and in Bach´s music we find this steady rock that we miss in our daily life? Just an amateur hypothesis.

@@staffanolofsson8201 It's not why I personally like it, although I recognize that he held this conviction and that you and many others who like Bach also share that belief. Remember, some of Bach's best performers/interpreters have been Jews, who worship on Saturday. One may hold strong convictions with regard to the absolute that cannot be adequately contained in the traditional dogmas. In a certain sense, Bach--at least his music--is even more _kata holikon_ than Christianity.

This is simply perfect. I loved the prelude with each hand assigned to its own uncoupled keyboard and the "mirror" changes in the repetitions. Nowadays, harpsichordists tend towards the dogmatism that everything (repeats and all) should just be played with both keyboards coupled, which is aurally so grating (I just finished listening to Rousset's CD of Frescobaldi, where he plays everything from start to finish with both 8 foot registers coupled. Ugh!). I loved Christine Schornsheim's decision to play the fugue on the UNCOUPLED lower keyboard. So beautiful, so clear, so profound, so - perfect. The only word to describe this, really. Christine Schornsheim is a gift to music and to music lovers everywhere.

What an amazing timbre this harpsichord has! So often such instruments sound airy and light, but this particular one has such a resounding quality to its sound! And no doubt the amazing player helps bring that out! Gorgeous performance!

What a harpsichord! In this special building it sounds so rich in tone. In the introduction I can read: Harpsichord: Bruce Kennedy, 1989 after Michael Mietke. And what a harpsichordist, Christine Schornsheim!

The instrument and the recording are both really charming. The tone of the instrument is such that I thought "OK, that is why Bach did not discard the 'pluck mechanism' when he around 1740 had the opportunity to play on one of the first German 'fortepiano'". Early pianos had leather hammers and therefore a rather sharp, "pointed" tone, not far from the harpsichord tone; but perhaps not so full as fx. this harpsichord.
@staffanolofsson8201
@staffanolofsson8201 Жыл бұрын
@@donaldaxel The early fortepianos around 1740 were perhaps not so well developed as the already wellknown harpsichords? And suffered from some initial problems? So Bach stayed with the harpsicord. I am sure, if Bach had lived 100 years later, he had wrote music for the piano. But it is wonderful to have the opportunity to listen to music as it sounded when Bach wrote all his music for harpsichord.

@@waffleman- Since it has 6 sharps and not 6 flats ( in the score) it should be called D# minor. But I don't know the exact exaplanation or history as to what key name it is supposed to have. This is an extraordinary prelude and fugue recording nonetheless...

As the two keys of D-sharp minor and E-flat minor are enharmonically equivalent, that may depend on the edition. The oldest manuscript available on IMSLP, from 1744, gives D# minor, as do all the editions I examined. I transposed my personal copy into E-flat minor; I find this much easier to read. What edition do you have, where the editor placed it in E-flat minor? I'm interested to know if any other enharmonically-equivalent substitutions were made, as they might also be easier to read.

How stunningly beautiful! Such emotion pervades the performance. What stunning acoustics, too, As a classical pianist, it always pains my feet to see harpsichords being played. I feel such a physical connection to music through my feet, and while I know there is no need for pedals in this great literature, it’s a real disconnect for my brain.

What tuning was used here? d-sharp minor is an odd key to begin with, and on a "well-tempered" instrument its dissonances can be exaggerated -- and Bach takes full advantage of this feature. This doesn't quite sound like an equal-tempered instrument to me.
