'Ole Audiophile 50 years in with info: I'm new to the pipe organ world. Audiophile's have a tendency to gather gear knowledge, it's what we do. Europe is submerged in aged organs. Many have been refurbished over the centuries three or more times, I've witnessed the signature faceplates. Most are simply one of a kind at this point in their storied careers. But hope abounds, because competent builders still exist in this world. Third best I'll offer is a new Marcussen. They seem to be centered around Manchester for some reason. 2nd best would be an Austrian made Reiger. Like a fine sculpture, these organs are pure artform. The best sounding & looking organs of today seem to be centered around Poland, where most of them reside. They are called Zych. Look for them in videos, they are absolutely stunning. Thanx.

Are there orchestral pieces in which the organ comes in immediately at the start of the piece? I imagine there must be. But if that's so then I'm curious about how the organist knows when to come in if he or she can't see the conductor or the rest of the orchestra.

there may be an obvious answer to this question that I can't think of, but if we have organs that are still in use since Bach's day, why is bach's system of intonation such a mystery? A clavier going out of tune I can understand, but an organ--if it's properly cared for? Wouldn't we still have the measurements for the pipes?
@titorosado61983 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, organs also go out of tune. To conplicate matters even more, the tuning preferences varied through the course of history. Because of this two things, the original tuning of 18th century organs didn't survive (to my knowledge) until today. I hope this was helpful :) (sorry if what I wrote is confusing, English isn't my first language)
@alistairkirk32643 жыл бұрын
@@titorosado6198 Your English was great! Yes, the vast majority of these organs were re-tuned to equal temperament in the 19th and 20th centuries, sometimes even by cutting the pipes - so not only is the tuning damaged, but the sound too!
@titorosado61983 жыл бұрын
@@alistairkirk3264 Thank you 😊
@WouterTukker7 ай бұрын
@@titorosado6198 In this context, important is what Ton Koopman says @ 7:00: Silbermann used to apply old-fashioned unequal tuning, causing organs to sound well only in keys with no or few flats or sharps, whereas Hildebrandt applied a newer, more equalized tuning, allowing for the organ to sound "more or less" pure also in more remote keys with more flats and sharps than common ... The ultimate proof of Bach´s preference for Hildebrandt´s tuning is set by his "Well-tempered Clavier", in which he proceeds through all possible major and minor keys, thus testing each instrument´s compatibility against his ideal of proper tuning, leading to what we know and hear today as "Equal Tuning" ...
@titorosado61987 ай бұрын
@@WouterTukker That is actually a myth. The old fashioned unequal tuning is a family of temperaments called meantone. The more equalized temperaments Bach advocates for are called well temperaments. These temperaments, despite sounding good in all keys, were still unequal, making different keys sound different. Usually (i speak from my own experience), the more remote keys acquire a "harsher" character, while the keys with less accidentals tend to be "sweeter". In keyboard instruments, equal temperament only overshadowed irregular temperaments at the end of 18th century, because it permitted bold modulations without the composers (or improvisers) being constantly worried about changes of character. On the other hand, equal temperament has been popular for fretted instruments since the Renaissance. Here's a link where you can find detailed descriptions of a variety of temperaments (read with a critical mind, because this writer is biased against et) : www.hpschd.nu/index.html?nav/nav-4.html&t/welcome.html&www.hpschd.nu/tech/tmp/spiral.html I can only understand the video through the subtitles (I don't know if the audio has some explanation about the tuning of the organ, but unfortunately I didn't find it in the subtitles)
@PointyTailofSatan3 жыл бұрын
As an organist, I could never play the organ at St Thomas, even if I was allowed. Just thinking about it makes me shake, even though it's not the same organ that Bach used. Anyone but Bach playing there seems like one is polluting it's karma. lol

I was astonished to hear so much extra sound and noise from each key in this film with the phantastic Ton Koopman! When you sit and play on this organ ( I once had the chance) you don't hear any other sounds from keys or parts of the mechanics. Perhaps the noise sound we hear in this Video was recorded by an extra mic and was later mixed with the sound of the stops?
@WouterTukker7 ай бұрын
@@guitarsupport That is the charm of organs restored to their original state: it pertains to all senses, not only does one FEEL the mechanical contact with traction and pipes, one also HEARS how the tone is mechanically produced by the rattling sounds of tracts opening the wind chest ...
